Anyone near the Whitehall area have Marans day olds or eggs ? Or Pure Blue layers (not easter eggers) ?? Please email me because I don't get into this site often - thanks [email protected]
Oh - and my coop is about 8 x 8 imagine 3 full walls all with ventilation along the entire run where the rafters are - and one wall which is ONLY wire :) The birds love it - they pace in front of the wire and enjoy the fresh air until I let them out for the day.
ZUKE - I live in Vermont - just across the NY boarder near Glens Falls (Lake George). Plenty cold and snow ... I have Marans, Spitzhauben, EE, Blues but I did have some d"uccles a few years ago and those little birds also did well in my setup.
Re: Coop Design .... my is deep and I have the roost at the far back against the fully enclosed wall - BUT the front wall where the door is is ground to ceiling hardwire cloth !! Not enclosed at all - I ONLY put up plywood to cover it when we are having a blizzard or something - all winter...
Nice - I have hens at 3 and 4 years old that are still laying about that level of darkness that you show - even lighter - they are still darker than the classic brown farmer's egg :) So I'm very happy with my Marans girls. Glad you like yours too !
Gramma ! Yeah ! Grandpeeps !
Yes - sorry all - I've been so busy - and then took yesterday off to go pick up some chicks (of course) and then took the time to create a new email just for this darn site to work. If I missed any questions to me - or anything anyone wanted me to know -...

Boskilli - here is the link you were asking about - lot of reading to get to the good info - but that is the way of it :) https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/blue-egg-layers-from-university-of-arkansas.624359/
Sorry been so quiet all - roofing problems and getting back on new and improved site problems. All settled now.
FINALLY got the Marans into their breeder pen - about 6 weeks behind schedule !! Sheesh. If I missed anything any of you want me to know in the last 3 weeks - just let me...
Just be careful on how and when you apply this - as it could harm bees - who are having a hard time .... inside coop - inside a dust bath - maybe right on them if you have a mite problem ...
Using it in the GARDEN: Even if you apply right before the rain or at night DE dries out and is as...
FishMtFarm - Barred Rock or Cucko Marans - are the most likely breeds ... depends on the order you placed ? If from a breeder -they surely can tell you.
:)
Pyxis - Blue Seal in Brandon is putting a sale on their young peeps - super healthy and all under $2 .... Just saying in case you want more trouble !!!
Gramma - is it possible you hatched out a hen with Cowboy ? Remember my feather colors won't always look like a Marans - but the egg color...
You didn't fail the chicks - some get it - prone more from shipping at an early age is what I think ... just wipe 'em up and keep going.
Sounds to me like you are fussing actually too much - You can fuss certain to death or bad behavior. All my adults are outside and fine - other than not...
Baunlee - I think you are closer - I am on the other side of Glens Falls by a good 1/2 hour.
I have 2 lav/splash Pure marans hens and some BCM hens - some mixed Marans hens (have all sorts of color in their genetics) and my roo is BCM .... so that is my parent mix .... all Pure Marans...
So sorry - we all know how valuable a good rooster is ....
Mine are all doing fine in this winter - even the ones I got from fellow BYC'ers - Rex, Duke and Baron - all young roosters - I must have been out of my mind to take them in - but they are all doing well and looking good. :)
I will have BCMarans and also a mix of Pure Marans just in different feather coloring (two blue/splash mothers, two bc/crossed w cuckoo) - but it is too cold here now to even have them separated in their breeder pens ... SO ... I'll have fertile eggs at chickenstock - and maybe some peeps -but...
ha ha :) not sure of the scientific name - but it has yellow on its belly and for sure is a woodpecker
It takes a big seed - flys to a spot - the same spot - on a tree and cracks it open - then repeats. Takes a lot longer than the other birds that do any eating and cracking right at the...
