I haven't seen any duck eggs yet, fortunately. I have enough broody hens that keep the eggs from freezing in the coop. That's the bright side of that problem I guess.

Yet it never fails. I have had 5 go broody in the last 3 days.

Neighbors aren't too close fortunately. I did have some turkey hens that would take their babies on a half mile hike to visit on occasion. The neighbors rather enjoyed them :)

My birds are great fliers, not many trees, so they spend a lot of time in the rafters or on the roof.

I am hatching a few chicks now, but no adults available at this time. I know Emily at Rosewood Farms had some trios for sale. She is ottbjumper06 on BYC.

I live near Belle Plaine and raise Iowa Blues. I have a few odds and ends of other breeds, as well as heritage turkeys and Muscovy ducks. We had to improve our fencing to keep the fox out and now have a Great Pyrenees that keeps most predators away. I free range all but the birds in the breeding...

Mine are good layers too, My girls produce 5-7 eggs per week when they are laying. But then they go broody, and that's it.

Personally I would wait at least until they are feathered out.

If your bantams are like mine they will hold their own as long as they have enough room. Be sure to add them when they are young, and they will join the pecking order more easily.

Usually they carry black or red sexlinks at the farm stores. They might be called something else, depending on what hatchery they use. You also might be able to order small quantity through TSC or Theisens. The Cedar Rapids stores do that.

My Iowa Blues are improving each generation. They lay pretty well, but they are very broody in the summer, so they don't produce as much the black or red sex-links. They are great free rangers and fly well. I haven't seen roosters fight hawks, but witnessed two battles with hawks and hens, which...
