Sorry about the smashed egg. Was it also from that pullet?

Thanks for your help! I really appreciate it! Approximately when do regularly developing females start laying?

    Spitzhaubens

18 weeks plus one day. The darker one is getting a redder comb and has been checking out the nesting boxes lately. I finally got a decent picture of the darker one’s (the cockerel?) comb. It’s mostly hidden by crest feathers but not tiny anymore. Still no sign of pointy feathers where I’d expect...

17 weeks. Still a pair? I’m still not seeing any signs of spiky crest feathers, nor saddle feathers. The hackle feathers on both are still very rounded - I know the pictures don’t necessarily look that way, but the white spangles are making them look pointy. They’re remaining shorter too, not...

16 weeks. Both cockerel or a pair? I still can’t tell. All the head shots are of the lighter one whose gender is in question. Edited to clarify the pictures, as they didn’t upload in the order I hoped. The picture inside the coop with my daughter feeding is the darker one which is a cockerel.

Update: 14.5 weeks. First four are of the one that is still in question, last two pics are of the one that looks to be a cockerel for the sake of comparison. He’s getting to have a red comb, not sure how well it shows in the pictures. I don’t have a good front picture that shows the comb on the...

I got some hatching eggs that were supposed to be either pure Ameraucana or Ameraucana x Legbar. When two hatched out with dark skin, feathered legs and 5 toes, I knew something was amiss. Turns out the breeder’s Silkie rooster got into the breeding pen. The husband saw it but didn’t think it...

    Spitzhaubens

13 weeks and a couple days. They’re integrating with the main flock, and it’s been fun to see them out foraging. The bigger one is developing a much darker buff color and the comb is getting pretty red. I’m guessing cockerel at this point and waiting on saddle feathers to confirm it. The smaller...

12 week update pictures. Still looking like pullets? I’ve yet to see any saddle feathers, not sure when you can expect to see them with this breed.

    Spitzhaubens

I have a couple of Sultans, and the female’s hairdos are more tame and rounded compared to the male’s. It looks like that’s also the case for Spitz’s. When would you expect to see a noticeable difference in head feathers? Also, are chamois colored birds usually this light? I’m just trying to...

Hooray! That will make her happy. The other two chicks she picked out are a different breed and looking very male to me.

    Spitzhaubens

My sister picked up a couple of Chamois Appenzeller Spitzhauben chicks this week. I’m not familiar much with the breed but wondering if any of you can offer some guesses as to sex. They are 9 weeks and a few days in these pictures. The bigger one has a neater crest, the smaller one has less tidy...
