    Yeah, heard a lot of bad things about poultry from them, from terrible male to female ratios to poor conditions to diseased chicks. ETA: Oh, and also breeds being mixed up seems to be pretty common.

    Yeah, makes me very nervous buying from a place like that. I've never bought from TSC for that reason, but it may be the only, or at least easiest, option I have to get certain breeds in low quantities.

    Okay, I get the first part - I also would rather stay home and be a farmer. But good farmers don't make impulse animal purchases. They make sure they have enough space, money, etc., before considering getting new animals. I hope you do.

    I know it's just anecdotal, but I see on this forum and have experienced first-hand lots of problems with hatchery Buff Orpingtons. It seems (to me) they are prone to having reproductive problems early. I am interested in dark brown egg layers and larger, healthier birds, so Marans and Jersey...
