Sorry to hear about your losses. I lost one hen on Father's Day due to heat and laying stress on a 108-109°day and she was disabled with a broken leg that never healed properly. All my other chickens did okay. Weird about the fading. I have many large black chickens (2 Australorp, 1 Jersey...

You did the right thing in separating the chick from the mom. I agree with the advice you have received so far from @sol2go and @amelia egghart If you do plan on re-introducing it back to the mom, make sure you are close by to supervise in case she rejects to chick. If she rejects the...

I'll have to dig it up. Had to archive. Too many chicken pics on phone And it was over a year ago. I have in progress pics too. Hmm, maybe I should do as blog post. Enough ppl I meet/talk to ask about it. Lol.

We built ours. We call it "The Cock Pit" We were going to totally build from scratch, but we were lucky enough to find a small well-built coop that was never really used for free (the owner had it custom built, but it was too big for her run). So we insulated it and added another layer of...

They are tiny! Seramas are the smallest chicken breed in the world. I think they are smaller than most bantams (I think. Not sure because I don't have any bantams.) They are definitely smaller than silkies. I'm on my way to someone's place right now. Later I will dig up some pics I took a while...

Thanks! Aren't they!?!? <3 if I didn't have a large standard flock, I'd totally get some. Luckily I can at least visit my dad's cuties.

If anyone is interested in some Serama chicks, my dad is selling 4 one-month olds (straight run) and 2 four-month old cockerels. The mama hen pictured with the baby chicks is not for sale. Here's the link to the ad if interested. I'm actually helping him sell because his English isn't great...

Whether they are drip or misters depends on the holes and structure of the nozzles. I didn't look too closely, but the system in the 2nd link is for drip. They don't appear to be misting nozzles or adjustable for misting. Usually they can adjust to control some of the flow of water, but drip...

I prefer the misters (first link) over the drip irrigation. Misters overhead is more cooling and it saves more water. The drip will puddle, make things too wet and waste water. The mister seems a little too heavy-duty for a chicken coop. You don't need that many nozzles unless you have like 150...

Ugh. Stupid heat wave. I am so sorry about your loss. The extreme heat makes it so hard to keep your animals safe and comfy...and ourselves too. :(

Thank you! Unfortunately, we lost one on Sunday. The coop and nests usually don't get hot, but it was hot on Sunday. Our hen died in the nest. I think she was probably straining to lay and got a bit too stressed with the heat. She's a special needs hen with a limp, so it takes extra effort and...

I got up early this morning to buy parts and to modify and beef up the mister I made 1.5 years ago. It went from this (one nozzle): To this (3 nozzle): I mount it to various tree branches where they like to hang out. Doing it this way is cheap, versatile and significantly lowers the...
