Welcome! Silkies are so adorable. DNA-sexing and Mareks vaccinating day-old chicks would help sell them. Cockerels are frequently given away free as many areas prohibit roo's while many buyers want more guaranteed DNA-sexed females. From past heartaches as a paying customer I only purchase...

I love Silkies with 5 of my own today (plus one old Dominique hen). I had the same issue as you -- 2 Silkies for 6 yrs and then one passed and left a lone Silkie. For biosecurity reasons you may find it difficult for someone w/chickens to take in an outside bird (for her and their biosecurity...

@chfriedmam -- sounds to me like you've had plenty on your plate too. Hope you can keep some of your flock for a while. I'm 80 this year and not getting any more new birds after the 3 new Silkie chicks. I just love the little buggers and can't imagine not having them around as I age further...

WOW! you are DOWNSIZING! We store feed bags in our garage too but we use close lid metal pails to store feed so critters don't get to feed. Bless you while downsizing and adjusting. Yesterday in the pouring rain we went to our 3rd family and friends funeral in 6 weeks and it's exhausting!

@DAPARROT -- that is so sad. They look so sweet and old enough to not need usual chick care. After initial biosecurity separation, if your flock are all vaccinated you can eventually integrate this couple into your flock. But if your birds are not vaccinated then I wouldn't keep them. I get...

@DAPARROT -- Awww -- poor babies! Believe me these chicks will grow so fast you won't have to worry about caring for chicks. Handle them, hold them, chop up finely fresh spinach, carrots, cukes, apples, cooked sweet potato, or look up what you can or cannot feed chickens and you'll soon have...

@CloneFly -- have you inquired on the BYC Orpington thread (if there is one)? Someone might know someone who has them :). The rare birds/rare color varieties take a bit of searching. I had to wait nearly 9 months to find a nearby Silkie breeder to fill my order for a Blue Silkie (which I had...

@chfriedmam - Oh, I'm so sorry for your loss. We've gone thru 2 family losses this month ourselves. Never easy but somehow we get thru it. :( Beautiful girls!

@QueenofKings - Copper Marans never went out of style cuz they're used not only for chocolate eggs but also used to create Olive Eggers. CMs have only gained momentum since their first introduction. I loved the gentle temperament Blue Bredas a few years ago but their low gene pool created...

@QueenofKings -- As you say life happens. Welcome back! Haven't heard much on this thread for awhile either. Just some general info I want to add. I've had many different breeds of chickens in the last 13 years but as a senior I decided to add only easy-to-manage Silkies as our flock...

@Chickole -- it's getting rare to find local sanctuaries. Many livestock properties are hesitant to bring outside birds onto their land cuz of biosecurity issues. Check out rural areas like Palmdale/Lancaster, Riverside County, or Central Calif Valley areas for sanctuaries. And if you...

@TwoCrows I LOVE Crows! Our neighborhood murder soars overhead and chases off the Cooper's Hawks (chicken hawks) in our area. Had one dumb juvenile hawk knock himself out smashing/flying into the side of our coop kennel - wish I had a camera then! Anyway, LOVE our Crows -- they sit on the...

@chfriedmam It's the pits having to re-home. We've done it thrice in a dozen years cuz we aren't zoned for roos. And now none of those rescues are around any more. Roos seem to wind up on other people's dinner tables which is why we don't hatch eggs cuz there's nowhere closeby to re-home...

Getting tired of this So Calif humidity! Now there's a warehouse fire in L.A. blowing its putrid smoke into our San Gabriel Mountains - 125+ firefighters have to let it burn cuz they can't get inside to fight smoldering contents stacked ceiling to floor on both first and 2nd floors of the old...

My very first two chicks 11 years ago -- one turned out to be a cockerel and we had to give him up also. It's very hard to rehome cockerels -- especially since we get so attached to the sweet ones!

Keep in mind that even if you find out that your area allows poultry, if you have just one neighbor that complains about your flock, you may face fines or disbanding your flock. We happened to have neighbors that didn't complain about our 4 backyard hens, but old neighbors die or move away and...

See if BlackHensFarm.com can recommend a solution. Years ago they used to rescue chickens but not sure now. Their website is still up.

This is what happens to my Silkies when it rains even just a little bit. We built 2 large covered patio shelters and a covered walkway and the hens still love to go forage in the mud puddles for all the crickets, earthworms, and other bugs that the rain brings to the surface! Even suburban...
