Sadly it's spreading. Newest case of Newcastle disease is in Ventura County. Do not accept any birds from here, or if you are in contact with any birds from this area, please practice intense biosecurity when going back to your property.

I think that was very unusual with Silkies, back then I knew someone else that got theirs from the same place, and they ended up with MOSTLY female. We joked that she got all my girls and I got all her boys.

Your best bet is looking in the Buy/Sell/Trade posts on BYC https://www.backyardchickens.com/forums/#buy-sell-trade.67 The first silkies I got, I got from a hatchery. They sent me 22 chicks, 18 or so end up being boys. At that rate, I figured I rather just hatch my own. I got hatching...

Here's a conversation I found. Deanna No. They need a meal type bedding since they eat it Elias I have raised them before in soiled chicken bedding with great success ! I switched to mealworms which to me are less messy Jayson BSF Can be kept in straight food waste. They eat it and then...

Sorry! My city bans roos, so I'm always rehoming the ones I hatch. There are 2 feed stores near me that will take them. There is a guy that feeds his family with donated roosters, and there is a hill, called rooster hill that people dump their roos - someone feeds and waters them, but they...

Some breeds are easier to sex than others. To me, it's easier to sex chicks when you have multiple of the breed. I had 3 Barnvelders hatch a few months ago. 2 had tails really early, 2 got combs a lot faster. So, I figure I have 2 boys, 1 girl. Now that they are a lot older, I'm positive I...

I'm glad that the move worked out so well. What breed is the chick? For a hen, that red comb seems to be roo-ish. I hope it's a pullet!!! For my move, I had a coop with my bully Polish hens, plus the 55 flowery and Silverudd Blue pullets I haven't sold yet, plus a few bantams. One silkie...

This is a great answer. I agree, when you have only 2 chicks, they can't help keep each other warm, if it gets cold. I would give the one not fully feathered time to catch up. I think the heat of the daytime might be as much a problem as the cooler nights, unless you have a nice shady area...

We were notified about a planned outage scheduled for this Thursday. Since we went solar a few months ago, with a battery backup, it should be interesting to see if we actually lose power.....

I find that a broody hen, when they first get chicks, want that chick to stay under her feathers, and not wander too far. She pecks the crap out of the adventurous ones. There might be a problem, because at 2 weeks, they are pretty independent. I'd give her one at night and watch her...

Oh, and I have a trio of Double silver laced barnevelders, I think there is 1 roo, maybe 2. They are 4 weeks old and only 1 has a red comb. So, I'm keeping my fingers crossed on the other 2. Since I can not keep ANY roos, if anyone wants the Barnvelder roo, once I truly sex them, he's free!

I have a bunch of chicks - I hatched them on March 1st - 6 BBS Copper, 4 F4 OEs that I can't tell the difference between them. Then I won 15 three week old chicks at the same time - seems like I have mostly Maran roos. Blue, Splash and Black Copper. The black roos are getting the copper...
