    Winter Gardens/ Greenhouse!

We are warm enough now to start hardening plants off. The problem is our last frost date is still a week or so out. Last year we had a freeze on May 26th, so I'm a bit skittish. Last year was the first year I got an actual luffa. I lost 3/4 plants in the May 26th freeze, which probably had a...

I divided two pots' worth of plants into four. I need more and bigger pots! I split a two-fer sunflower into two pots, and ditto with a luffa. I'll go up in a bit and see how they're doing. I chose those because I have a lot of both, and if they didn't make it, I wasn't going to be short of...

 Yes, it is a good idea. But, I actually haven't done it. I just thought it would be proper to include that as a step. I really should do it...

After everything is planted, I stack them and gather up the lids. Then on a nice day, particularly after a dry spell, I lay them all out on the grass near a tree I want to water. Put a couple gallons of water in a clean bucket, add a glug or two of bleach. I get the hose, and spray them all...

I have friends save containers for me. No way I could eat 70 containers of cottage cheese or yogurt! :gig I've gotten about 3 years out of them, before they get brittle and start breaking. On transplant day, I dig the hole, then carefully take off the lid. Set the pot/plant into the hole, and...

When I start plants, I use cottage cheese/large yogurt containers as the pots. Yes, it takes a lot more soil, but there's plenty of room for the plants for the 8ish weeks they're going to be in the pot. I also "turn the container over." I cut the bottom off, use the lidded side as the bottom...

At that size, the best one is *probably* the seedling with the sturdiest looking stem. Instead of pulling the others out, just snip the rejects off with a pair of scissors at dirt level. That way, you don't disturb the roots.

Can you get some liquid fertilizer to water them with? They look like they need a boost.

How long does it take for Black Eyed Susans to sprout from seed? Even the luffa was up before them, and luffa are picky about everything, when it comes to sprouting.

I can 55-60 quarts every year. Hubby likes a lot of HOT salsa, so I need some for that. Plus fresh eating. At the end of the season, I take the green tomatoes and make wimpy green salsa for me. My best producers have been Italian Heirloom and Hungarian Heart. And some others I can't think of...

Oh, no. These are for my tomato, pepper, and any other starts I want to grow. I'll be planting seeds in about a week. I'll probably do 70 pots of tomatoes this year. 10-15 peppers of various kinds, I'll try loofas again, and see what else is in the seed bin. I order seeds in December/January...

30 more pots sitting in the green house, warming up in the sunshine. I have a total of 80, think I should have another 20, just in case.

This was yesterday: It's all melting now. Should be gone in another day or so. I'll spend some time in the green house today, filling more pots with potting soil and watering them, then leaving them to get nice and warm. I have 50, plus 8 with kale/spinach that are going out to the garden...

I usually plant onion sets instead of seeds. I have a lot more luck with those. Onion seeds are said to be viable for only about a year, so if your seed is old, that could be the reason for your poor germination rate.

Those have been one of my BEST producing tomato varieties. :thumbsup I left a pair of tomato plants in the greenhouse all summer one year. They did VERY poorly because it just got to bleeping HOT! If you do leave some in there, you need to be able to get a lot of airflow to cool it off.

I went up to the green house today. The tote with water in it is a huge block of ice, floating in a bit of water. The kale seedlings might be all toast. There is one spinach seedling, and it looks like it might be ok. Supposed to get below zero F Friday night/Saturday morning.

I haven't been inside my green house since the weather got cold and nasty. Next week, the temps moderate, and I'll go see if anything is still alive.

I have a single spinach seedling. And bunch of kale seedlings. They want some sunlight. So do I.
