I don't think the typical chicken keeper interested in eggs and pets, and not free ranging, needs a rooster at all. Life with just hens is quieter, peaceful, less feed, and such. If they range around, roosters are useful for their alerting behaviors. Hens don't really keep an eye on the sky...
