I have been following along but not commenting much. We had a beautiful “warm” day (for February), so I did some fence repair and garden work. Threw down some straw for the ladies in the extended run. I think they appreciated it! Can finally pay some owed tax:
The snow on the grass melted a bit today before we hit single digits (F) here next week. The run & garden were still snow covered, so I let the ladies out into some grassy areas under supervision as to not visit the neighbors yard. It was about 40F here today, so we stayed out with them for over...
Lost the thread for awhile. Hi everyone! Will try to get some new pics of the ladies soon! We have our first two pullets laying now, but it’s been cold and raining, very dreary, for the past week or so.
Have an order in w a local farm for 3 heritage turkeys, 2 regular and 1 they will grind for us for ground turkey. Will probably end up spending $150. The grocery has turkeys for 49c/lb. Can’t bring myself to buy one there…it’s very frustrating though.
Oddly enough, my uncle just offered me some! 😂
I think people get impatient, as new chicks won’t roost right away and will sleep in a big pile together. I am guilty of showing my chicks how to roost at about the 8 week mark, if they haven’t done it already. If there are no older chickens to...
I have heard similar. I eat wild caught salmon once a week, and wild caught sardines 1-2 times a week. The good quality sardines are $3.50 per package, but I don’t mind spending extra money for my own safety. I would rather skimp on items not entering my body. I won’t eat any meat if it isn’t...
Do they offer a starter/grower chick feed? I’ve been feeding mine that (20% protein), since my new chicks are not laying yet and almost everyone else is in molt. My two hens still laying have been eating lots of oyster/egg shell when I refill the buckets, and the rest are mostly ignoring it.
My flock of “older” ladies are about 17 months old (the young ones are only 4 months…lucky the ordered pullets plus 3 hatchlings from my broody ended up being all pullets so they all got to stay!)
I have an app that keeps track of laying, and will have much more to weigh in on with this topic...
I had some owed tax, and remembered to take some pics when I went out to give the flock our food scraps:
Cheddar the Naked Neck, starting to turn a bit more red. They will be 16 weeks on Tuesday!
Miso the Legbar. She is very personable, and if I have to pick her up for any particular reason...
I’ve done it all too…vegan & vegetarian made me sick and weak…I have a few conditions that seem to be doing well on what I call pegan (paleo-vegan mix)? TONS of organic veggies (raw & cooked), meat protein (locally & ethically sourced) at 2 plus meals a day. Healthy fats unrestricted (ghee...
I haven’t taken pics for tax in awhile, so I captured the morning stampede today when I opened the door to let the ladies out! They all come running, except my Sussex, who waits til the commotion is over and is always the last one to jump off the roost and come out.
