This was surprising to me also. I think it's also the RIRs growing somewhat slowly, because I raised CornishX with ducklings and the growth difference wasn't as obvious.
Just for giggles I weighed them today, 4.25 oz for a random chick, and 10.55 oz for a duckling, so roughly 2.5 times the size.
Here is a sample of my October hatch, with the RIR chicks and Welsh Harlequin duckling hatched on the same day, two weeks ago. The size difference is amazing to me. I have 21 ducklings and 6 chicks from this hatch, all looking good to me so far. I intend to keep all the RIR hens and the best...
Thank you! Rubbermaid's finest! The chicks will stay in there until fully feathered at least, and the klings will move to the floor soon. I'll start sending the boys to Freezer Camp after Week 7.
Okay, here's my final hatch stats:
6 Rhode Island Red eggs set, 6 hatched.
56 Welsh Harlequin duck eggs set, 22 hatched.
Other than starting early, no significant issues, and the hatchlings all look good after 24-48 hours.
Of the 34 unhatched duck eggs, 6 were infertile and pulled on Day 7...
If there's a "Worst Photographer" contest, here is my submission :p
My spooky Welsh Harlequin klings scared me by hatching two days earlier than I expected. Like, I entered the bird room to lock down the incubator, and found 5 of them riding the automatic egg turner ride. Wheeeee!!!
I'll...
That's RAD! :thumbsupWhat is the light source? I'm planning to candle duck eggs in two days on Day 7, which I know is early. The incubator is full, and fertility is unproven, so my thought is I can replace the clears with chicken eggs and they "should" hatch on the same date. Hopefully...
