UK Bird Flu - All poultry must be housed indoors by 14th December

Yeah, I keep seperate wellies in their run stored upside down on old garden tool handles (learnt the hard way when they got filled with muck etc from hens:rolleyes:) Those boots never leave the run. Then regularly disinfect garden shoes too. I'm sure the chickens get a good laugh at me balancing...

UK Bird Flu - All poultry must be housed indoors by 14th December

Ok, see where you are coming from. I only keep chickens and they have plenty of space in their permanent (enclosed) run, so they will not suffer from being kept in. Especially as they are spoiled ladies with lots of distractions :) I am in south Cambridgeshire so plenty of waterfowl flying by...

UK Bird Flu - All poultry must be housed indoors by 14th December

After reading the APHA advice, my understanding is that we are responsible for ensuring that rodents and wild birds do not contaminate any food or water sources. That can be achieved by preventing them entering the coop or run... for example by using wire mesh. Have you interpreted the advice...

Of course they need to come into contact with infected birds first, but the mesh should prevent small pests getting access.

UK Bird Flu - All poultry must be housed indoors by 14th December

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/avian-influenza-bird-flu On page 4 of the biosecurity advice booklet. It's in a few of the APHA advice booklets: Protecting your birds from wild birds One way by which notifiable avian disease may spread to poultry is through contact with infected wild birds. Contact...

UK Bird Flu - All poultry must be housed indoors by 14th December

I get that the flockdown is a pain... but I have been super careful with my flock as it just isn't worth risking losing all my girls. They (6 hens) have been locked down in a 20 sqm run since the flockdown started... they aren't happy about it, but keeping them busy and distracted has helped...

UK Bird Flu - All poultry must be housed indoors by 14th December

My 3 girls can be very screamy when they want something too :D Good news is that they can be distracted... I give a few perches and chunks of tree in the enclosed run and change it around every few days. Just moving things around gets them interested & keeps them busy, especially if you do it...

UK Bird Flu - All poultry must be housed indoors by 14th December

Yeah, my understanding of the gov.uk website is that netting (bird netting) a run will be ok, but personally I would make a solid roof if you haven't got one already. Clear tarp/ greenhouse material would be an inexpensive idea. I got a large 4m x 5m clear tarp from Toolstation when I built my...

UK Bird Flu - All poultry must be housed indoors by 14th December

Yeah, just read about this today! :( Luckily my girls spend their days in an enclosed and covered run, and I use an extension with a netted cover so just a little bit of security tightening needed here. Pretty new to chicken keeping, so scary times.
