The link to a highly relevant video on rat proofing included on my original post has gone dead, and I'm no longer able to edit the original post.
This is the new link.......
IF anyone from BYC with ability to edit the original post can make this change, it would help.
If I'm reading this correctly, what you are saying is that despite the good success with your trapping program, you still have a large number of rats?
If so, that confirms the notion that trapping alone won't do it.
On the use of traps alone as a method of rat control, I suggest you not go too far down that rabbit hole chasing after solutions. Traps alone won't do it. And that includes the trash can traps.
Main benefit of traps is to monitor the situation to tell when rats are present. ** Granted, what...
What you are referring to is the risk of "secondary poisoning". This question was posed to BYC members in this thread:
https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/dead-rats-and-secondary-poisoning.1283489/
I think a fair summary is that while the risk is possible, it is also remote and what risk...
Yup.....experience can be a great teacher. Or as someone once said, "good judgement comes from experience, and a lot of that experience is gained from bad judgement".
And your willingness to share your experience is helpful to others who haven't been down that road. So hopefully if they watch...
Did you watch the 2nd video on rat proofing.......the part where it explains how rats are able to tunnel in?
Dealing with rats and chickens is not a new concept. Going back to poultry husbandry books written 100 years ago, one of the biggest issues they had even back then was rats. A#1 best...
As noted before, I seem to recall a LOT of BYC growers have tried this, and if memory serves it didn't work for them. Same with PB and plaster of paris. These seem to be examples of urban myth things folks find on the Internet. Another one is there are products that will kill a rat in the house...
There were products that worked that way......the red squill (a plant) mentioned in the rat killing video was one of those. Some have attempted to use baking soda the same way......something they found in the Internet. I don't think it worked for them. Same with feeding them plaster of paris...
One more thing I would add about mint oil, etc, do not rely upon that alone. You are still going to need to work on rat proofing the coop, etc. meaning exclusion. Physical barriers to keep them out of any food, water, chicken droppings, eggs, etc. that draw them to your birds in the first place...
Did a quick search on peppermint oil.....NOT extract......oil....... and a lot of stuff comes up......this being one of the more concise articles:

If you feel this is a solution that will work for you, do try it and report back with the results...
You may find some dead ones, but the vast majority go home to die. (Once they start feeling sick, they retreat to the safety/security of their tunnels). They do down and never get up.
Yes, that would have been a hard lesson to learn.
If you watch the 3rd video, the one on "rat killing", it clearly shows how the rats carry off the baits. In fact, it even shows the guys intentionally placing baits at the openings to the tunnels, knowing the rats will take them inside to eat...
This site sells RatX as well as many other professional grade products:
https://www.domyown.com/rat-poisonbait-c-21_133.html
Reviews on it are generally positive. Seems someone on BYC reported using it about a year ago with mixed results. As I recall, her rats weren't interested in it.
But...
This thread is a condensed summary of information found in numerous other threads, and all of it designed to help concerned BYC growers deal with rat their infestations. It is divided into three parts:
1. Know your rat
2. Rat Proofing
3. Elimination
Each of these sections will also include...
