I got started raising chickens again last year so my granddaughter could see the chicks hatching and raise them. I have to admit I enjoy it as much as she does. We also raise butterflies in the summer. She can't wait for the butterflies.
I also have a large backyard. I started them with the backyard first. It lets you see how they respond to the free ranging and it gets them accustomed to returning to the coop in the evening. I have 5 acres and the chickens never leave the acre the house sits on.
You need to sit with them and feed them not necessarily for long periods. I usually carry some kind of food with me. if I am working outside I sit down and take a break and scatter a little food for them. They have to get comfortable with you and anticipate a little food. I feel like the Pied...
That chicken union is tough. They don't lay in the fall because they are molting. They don't lay in the winter because it is too cold. They don't lay in the spring because the weather is too nice and they don't want to go inside. And they don't want to lay in the summer because it is too hot...
Who does she raise puppies for? Leader Dogs or Southeastern Guide Dogs. That is a tough job. Raising puppies through those early days and then giving to someone else that needs him and starting all over again. Tell her we appreciate her work.
In case anybody is interested, Minton Lawn and Garden Center in Macon is getting chicks this week. I don't know what breeds. They are getting Mallard ducks the week before easter. They are supposed to call me on the ducks. They are south of I 75 on Pio Nono Avenue. If you are heading south go...
Mine also helps me see to do the evening feeding in the winter. With this DST I just have to convince the chickens that it is time to come into the coop so I can close up for the night.
I was responding to a comment about him never being able to wait always in a hurry. Nothing negative meant. I have a house full of them. I call them Grand children.
I grew up with them on the farm and raised them in the 4H Club. I left the farm years ago. My granddaughter wanted some last year and the time was right and that was the nudge it took. We have 12 adults and 7 month old chicks.
Pricing Fence posts, bring money. Actually treated 4x4s may be cheaper than posts. Landscape timbers are definitely cheaper. I treated the end giong in the ground with borax for additional rot resistance.
