I've been getting 1/6 for almost a month, now. Green eggs from an EE, is all I'm getting. I had 2 broody, and one has pretty much aged out - she's in "retirement" now. The first broody is done and started molting, so she still isn't laying. I think the other 3 are on strike out of sympathy for...
Hey, Blooie! How much are you charging for your eggs? I'm told the generic nasty ones (Grocery store eggs) cost $4 per doz right now, and the "good" ones are up to $7-8 per dozen. I've been charging $4 which was $2- 2.50 more than the nasties, but for some mysterious reason, commercial egg...
Mine have really slowed down, but they are definitely starting to molt. Ruby, who is a gorgeous Partridge Rock, is starting to look pathetic. Wanda has gone broody. So, that leaves me with 6 layers out of 8, at the most.
Go back and read my earlier posts. If your girls are at least 12 months...
Most likely it's b/c the older ladies are finally at an age to molt, which they typically do in the late summer/early fall months. When they molt, they need the protein they typically use for eggs, for making new feathers. Doing both (molting/laying) at the same time would be too taxing for...
Keep them locked in the area where the nest boxes are for several days, with golf balls or other dummies in the nests to "demonstrate". Allow them to free range again only after they get the idea and follow instructions.
Takes a while for the old feathers to fall out and new ones to grow in, during which time they need protein for feathers, leaving none to spare for eggs. So, a couple of months isn't unusual.
However, the good news is that, when they start to lay again, their eggs will be bigger and, as the...
NONE yesterday - as in zip, zero, zilch, nada. A big goose egg! However, I heard a lot of singing going on down there this morning and saw that 2 nest boxes were occupied, so I think they're apologizing. I swear they're getting ready to molt.
Yeah, every time I buy chicks, I get a pair of EEs. And, each time, one lays blue/green, and the other lays brown or cream. Don't know how I manage to pick 'em like that.
Oh. Well, that would explain it. Just a helpful hint, save yourself some aggrevation and time by dropping the apostrophe. It's not necessary when you're only indicating "more than one".
As a side note, you have my admiration for being able to live in that heat! What are the winters like?
Excuse me, but I just have to ask; why do you use the possessive form of the word, "egg", instead of the plural? You know, like 1 egg (singular), 2 eggs (plural), the egg's color (possessive). You do it consistently, so I knew it was intentional, rather than accidental. Plus, putting in the...
I'll have to remember these tricks if it becomes too hot for the girls. It's not been as bad here in the Blue Ridge Mtns (2000 feet, or so) as it's been for some others, so they've been fine staying in the shade of the Cypress trees. But, that doesn't mean it can't get that hot.
Thanks for the...
