International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

You would be working backwards. The Cock contributes his genes to all his progeny whereas the Hen contributes her genes only to her sons. Besides, you have better options with your other cockerels.

Pullet - Like her wide stance, she has a touch of mossiness but that should molt out.

Yes, both pullets and cockerels can be mossy. It’s not a desired trait - in some BCM Lines it molts out as they mature and in other lines it results in over colored adults.

I have never known TSC to carry Black Copper Marans (BCM). Where these specifically advertised as BCM? I have seen Midnight Majesty Marans at TSC but they are a hybrid (not purebred) by crossing a Barred Plymouth Rock with a BCM Hen. Mossiness occasionally shows up in some BCM Lines.

Vulture Hocks are long, straight, stiff downward-pointing feathers (somewhat similar to primary wing feathers) that grow from the lower part of the thighs. I believe someone previously posted pics of vulture hocks on this thread.

My guess is pullet in these 2 pics. I can’t tell if this is same bird or two different birds.

Even if they are all cockerels don’t give up on them yet. You never know you may get 1 or 2 decent cockerels that don’t have parasitic white. If they don’t turn out then make coq au vin or paella.

I am no expert on these issues but hereare my thoughts in order of your questions: 1. There are a lot of factors that can affect fertility. When a rooster mates a hen it can takes 7-10 days for the semen to reach the oviduct which is why most breeders say do not incubate eggs for at least a...

2-3 months for hackle, 3-4 month for saddle. Marans mature at different rates. Cocks may not show their true and full colors until they are 18-24 months old.

Males tend to have horn colored beaks whereas pullets will have a black beak. It’s not 100% depending on the BCM Line. For what it’s worth I hope I’m wrong.:D

As I recall, @kfelton0002 is a healthcare professional so I imagine she is working more than normal due to the coronavirus. @marchick was dealing with storm damage so that may still be an issue but hopefully not. I hope they are both doing well.

Overall I think I’m handling it pretty well. I raise cattle as well so I’m in the elements every day feeding, putting out hay and busting pond ice. The only thing that gets me is my hands, even with insulated gloves, after about 30 minutes I have to get back in my truck to warm up my hands...

Well, I’m getting a little taste of what it is like to live in cold weather. In North Texas we’ve been below freezing for 3 days and have another 6 days to go before we’re forecasted to be above 32 F (0 C). Sunday and Monday we’re supposed to be between 16 F (-8.8 C) and -2 F (-18.8 C). Texas...

Which club did you order from The Marans Club or Marans Chicken Club USA? If from The Marans Club new memebership packets and egg shade cards started going out this week. Both clubs are operated by volunteers so they have to mix in club work with their day jobs and taking care of their own...
