International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Well. Easter batch of marans, 19 hatched. Did wing/tail sexing, and we’ve just decided that either we suck or marans are hard to sex. So, looks like we have 10+ Roos from combs and waddles right now. I’ll try for some pictures later today, some nice weather for now.

So excited! We are going to separate the flock for breeding. This year we will be hatching: Ayam Cemanis, Sulmtalers, and of course, BCMs. Mom and I convinced dad to build us another coop too, so we should be able to hatch quite a few! Need to get new pics of everyone. I think I may have a new...

Diatomaceous Earth is a lifesaver. We mix it with ash and put it on the floor of the coop too, it helps repel lice/mites. If we get lice or mites we bathe everyone by hand with the ash and DE. I think we’ve dusted their food with it before too? Maybe.

International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

(Name Change :D) Ok. Looks like the young roo will be getting a breeding pen to himself next month! Focus on good tails, which I think he will do fine with. He seems to have a nice tail. Focus on feet, the maximum amount of feathers being like Shazia. Focus on combs, not too many points (5) on...

International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Thankyou! We didn’t realize our birds were such a nice quality until we came here. They started out a few years ago as those pretty eggs on Pinterest, then they were a fun project for my mom and I to try and hatch, and then... well ya know, they were addicting chickens haha. Now we’re here...

International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

And the dear boy. He may look a little ruff. He’s the youngest rooster in the flock and the Ayam Cemanis like to peck on him, plus he’s a softy and lets the hens walk all over him. I swear he has another leg, he just doesn’t like to get it dirty haha (Not a white feather, just an out...

@Chooks man Alrighty. From the beginning lol. This is from our youngest batch of Marans. There were only a few, I think 3 pullets and 1 cockerel. I’ll have to check our notebooks and see. I love the look of these ones, they all have a great heavy weight. And they seem to be looking very...

Haha I think it’s Shazia? We keep getting that poor hens name mixed up.

International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Alright. So focus on tails. Do you have any examples of a nice tail, or anyone else you know of? Does Shazia have a correct tail that we should try to recreate? If she crosses with Day Walker, who has a higher tail I think, will that start causing problems? And I can never remember, which parent...

International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

I think high tails are going to start causing an issue in our flock. These are some random girls that got caught over the last couple of days. Plus... Eggs!

The lovely Shazia was happy to model a few photos, so why not share? (We has to go through and trim wings due to some escape artists, and she was one of them. Can’t remember which side is cut)

Just caught up on the thread after a few weeks. Wow @Chooks man I can’t wait to see this MARNECK creation start. I wish you luck. @kfelton0002 I adore your hens. Love the size, they look bigger than mine! How old are they? And do you have recent picks of this Duke rooster?...

The eggs the pullets came from: Rudy with hackles: This is the most recent (The hen here was a cull) From June: His gold seems to be getting brighter.

International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

@Chooks man Rudy does have a gold halo on his hackles. I think that is his biggest fault. I’ll find an old picture if I can. @Old Man Tom Yup, western side. I think we aren’t going to be selling anything until we get the genes we want and don’t want singles out and taken care of. These...

International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

@Chooks man Thank you. I will get more pics today, hopefully it’s not raining. The relation of this hen: Rudy and Day Walker (I like that) are not related to her at all. None of our big hens are. Most of the chicks Rudy sired. Rudy is from a place in Washington called Willow Ridge Farm. You can...

On the pullets- I do believe most are his. A few may be from another roo. So yes, he is the sire.

Hens! We will start with the “old ladies”. These girls are 5 years now. Not sure if they are going to keep laying next year. Love them. They’ve lost their copper but still are MONSTER sized! Love their weight. Great temperament too! The newbies: A few of these little girls...
