Currently, I have no chickens :( but I plan on buying a new flock at the end of this year, or at least by half way through next.

Carbon monoxide works by bonding to hemoglobin in place of oxygen... it's another 'no gasp' method of suffocation and probably cheaper than argon.
I still have my money on a quick slice across the throat, it's less stressful than having to be put into some form of gassing apparatus.
Big one in group B pic 4 is SO a boy.
9th one in group B looks very cocky to me.
NOt getting enough contrast on the white ones to see the feather shape.

That's not what my logic is telling me... The brain is where pain is felt. Neck slitting (with a really sharp knife) is barely felt, but a spinal injury is excruciating. I would agree that it's only for a short time though.

I completely agree. Slitting and decapitation are all...
The problem with decapitation is that it's painful. The moment you compromise the spinal cord it sends loads of pain signals to the brain.
If you slice the neck, the wound is so clean it barely aggravates the nerves and by the time the cut starts hurting there is hardly any blood getting to the...
I have some broodies but they aren't sitting yet because it's a bit early. I have 3 roosters and I think they are all frisky so we should have about 11 girls laying fertile eggs.
I have a very low income and so I can't really spend much. I haven't got a brood lamp yet and I'm wondering if it's...

-edited to add- The picture is neat. I like the action
So um, do you mean like a sign:
SLOW -
Chickens at play.
or are your chickens slow...
Because I'm seeing it two ways right now.
Can't say that I agree with that last post, just from personal experience.
Thanks very much for the information folks. I'll just pay attention to how they look and smell. When I first moved in here there was a nest of 20 eggs in the long grass near the fence and we ate about half of them before...
Hi there folks. It's the middle of winter here and it's been pretty mild and the girls are back on the lay. The last week we have had a few frosts, and hail, and generally miserable weather that hasn't got much above 10°C (50°F).
We have 2 ducks and I've been collecting an egg a day but I just...
No problem! I found it really useful too. I also found that my boys were young enough to eat without leaving them to rest over night, but the meat is a lot tenderer if you leave the cleaned carcass in the fridge for a day or two before you cook them to let the meat soften.

As far as I understand it, it's a picture contest, not a drawing contest, am I right? I was planning on cleaning mine up in Photoshop (if I ever find a spare minute to submit anything -sigh-).
I have a hirpling little chicken and she didn't really start growing till about 22 weeks. She's now a teensy touch bigger than the smallest pullet of the brood hatched around 2 weeks after her.
Thanks for the tips.

I can't find any references to how voracious possums are, but I have seen them on the...
I am trying to learn how to make my own coop because I am looking after my birds with someone else's flock and I intend to move away from this property, probably within the next year. I'm considering making enough housing for 8 birds and separating the flock into 2 groups for spring (separating...
You could always try some essential oils like clove, lavender, citronella, garlic etc. It's not hippy so much as the types of defences that plants have against insects
If next summer is as bad as the last year we just had (we have trees that attract flies) I may buy good old fly paper to hang...
