Has anyone successfully built a coop/run around an existing tree?

Trust me, that's not in the cards. Only trees getting cut down are the ones that are too close to the house. I'm trying to avoid putting anything too close to the fences as the fence pictured on the left side of the photo has a neighbor, and the fence(s) to the right, back up to the street and...

Has anyone successfully built a coop/run around an existing tree?

Thanks, there are definitely some interesting ideas to draw from there. With my latest measurements, I think I've got more wiggle room on positioning of the "poultry pen" that will eventually make up my outer "coop", so I'm starting to think I should just turn everything 90 degrees and place the...

Looking for thoughts and experiences re: hardware cloth

Could you be more specific wrt "HD landscape staples"? 11 gauge? 9 gauge? Other? P.S. Thanks for all your advice on my other thread.

Has anyone successfully built a coop/run around an existing tree?

Here's another angle. Area beyond that tree is fair game to build, whereas the area to the top left starts encroaching on the neighbor, so I'm being mindful of playing nice wrt city regulations. You can also get a rough idea of where the door is located in this pic.

Has anyone successfully built a coop/run around an existing tree?

Hence the point of the post, which was asking if people had successfully incorporated one into their run while remaining secure, and if so, how.

Has anyone successfully built a coop/run around an existing tree?

For sure. I do worry about it continuing to grow sideways as my soil isn't super deep (mostly top soil they just dumped on top of limestone), but I've been in this house for almost 25 years and it was here when I moved in.

Has anyone successfully built a coop/run around an existing tree?

Same here, which is why I wanted to work around them. Going to double check with an arborist, but I'm pretty sure that Live Oak is going to be around for quite a while despite growing almost completely horizontally. Thanks, that's exactly the kind of idea(s), I'm looking to use based on other's...

Has anyone successfully built a coop/run around an existing tree?

I've got a spot picked up for my chickens that's nice and shady, but I'd like to include this oak tree that's growing almost horizontally. Any ideas on how I could incorporate it safely without ruining the integrity of my boundaries? I think the tree is likely if minimal value to the chickens...

Thanks for all the great info! We're still learning, so plenty of fun new things to read up on. Here's a better picture zoomed in on their faces. Now to read up on what it even means to have a pea comb. 😁

    Any Home Bakers Here?

Oh, happy to share. I literally just searched for sourdough souffle and happened to find this recipe! Had never been to the site before, but just winged it. I didn't have whole milk or heavy cream, so I just added a pat of butter, too. Also used ground up pecans to the dusting at the bottom as I...

    Any Home Bakers Here?

When I got asked if there was dessert around 2PM on Mother's Day, it occurred to me that "no" was not an acceptable answer, so I had to think fast and figure something out. Cheese souffle turned out pretty well for something that I have never made before. Didn't even collapse! Just used one too...

Chicken Math is real. 0 to 10 in 72 hrs.

(May 13 - Day 25) We did some minor tweaks to the Garage Mahal over the weekend: Did a full tray clean out, noting that a lot of the pine shavings were soaked and gross. Those gravity feeders are tricky to balance just right, and the chicks kept knocking into them or trying to stand on top of...

(May 8 - Day 20) I caught the bug that my wife had, so I haven't been 100% and we've had rain for about a week straight so I've mostly been hunkering down indoors. I noticed that the City of Austin regulations listed here were out of date, so I made a new post Today, the sun came out, so run v1...

    City of Austin

The City of Austin publishes a fairly complete chicken keeping guide that includes links to all of the rules/regulations. They also created a chicken keeping class that goes over a lot of this material. Of note, as of 10-20-2022, rules around chicken enclosure regulations were modified to...

We asked around and one of the classmates' families also identified their take home chickens as White Leghorns, so crossing our fingers that that's what we ended up with. At least then we only have to worry about in-city rooster issues and not freezer camp for the time being.

Comment by 'ATXInstantFlock' in article 'My $10 Inexpensive DIY Fodder Tower with Dollar Tree Dish Bins'

Stumbled across this thread. Great idea! As a suburban homeowner, I liked the idea of trying to do this without destroying the lawn in my backyard, but I don't think I have access to low cost seeds. I think using the leftover water to water herbs/houseplants might work out fine, as well. I'm not...
