We have 12 little girls that are 3 weeks old. (Wellsummers, Dorkings, Faverolles, and Ameraucauna) First timers! Husband just finished making a gate for our run today. The coop is ready! The girls have started going outside for playtime when it's nice out, which they love.
What we're not...
It's the kind pictured. It is raised but I think we may need to dump our bedding and restart, as it's getting pretty deep now from sprinkling over new poops. Far as I can tell they're just super messy. They're not tipping the feeder over but just pulling tons out and dropping as much as...
Our chicks are 2 weeks old. We have a chick feeder that they are constantly wasting a large portion of the food by dumping it on the ground. If I let the feeder go empty - will all of them find food from the pine bedding? Or is that too mean?
We got these vitamins for our new chicks. Do y'all keep giving these long-term? If not, for how long, or only in what circumstances? (We are starting out with Kalmbach organic starter grower, if what you feed impacts your vitamin decision)
Our property (3 acres, Pennsylvania, partially wooded along perimeter but majority land we use) is plagued by underground wasps for the last couple years, and seeming to escalate yearly. We have tried spot treating with diatomaceous earth, good ole wasp sprays, vinegar flooding, etc. It seems...
Thank you! I think I used the term deep litter just because in my head the sand method shared the "long term" part of deep little method - my mistake to convolute them. The books I've read described using sand and sifting poop out daily but leaving the main bed of sand in for quite a long...
Thank you! This is helpful. Yes! We did include poop boards in our coop. We just have to figure out how to position the roosts over them. Ours will be L shaped like your photo so that's again very helpful!
We're debating bedding for our new coop. Do I have this right, that sand is good as long as your coop stays dry? Our coop is raised and fully enclosed.
So far after several books read I'm leaning toward deep litter sand method. They will have a large protected run that will be on natural...
We're planning ours right now, too - have help coming to dig holes for the fence posts tomorrow! We are doing 1/2" hardware 6ft tall, and a 2ft apron. Husband is going to attempt to dig up just maybe 2-4" deep path around the fence to lay the 24" hardware cloth underground (imagine like...
Not that I recall - my parents were strict about what I watched and I wasn't the type to seek trouble lol. It seems like it was innate but made worse by relatively minor events as I got older - was swarmed by seagulls once, chased by a goose at a pond, etc. I'm now 42 and while it's not phobia...
thank you for that! despite living in virtual heaven for white tail deer, we didn't know about this option. may be easier and cheaper than even chicken wire
Hi all!
We are in Pennsylvania and about to get our first group of hens. We have hatchings reserved for us for a mix of Welsummer, Ameraucana, Dorkings and Faverolles, 11 total. We are so excited! We'll be brooding in modified XL plastic dog crates inside our house. Our coop is almost...
