Coop run for free range hens?

Update… Still have 9 birds and it looks like 2 (possibly 3) are roosters. We made the decision to keep a maximum of 6 but highly considering going down to 5. Coop is 6x5 (4’10” to be specific). Run is 11.5’ x 5’1” so just over 55sqft of run. We were going to put the coop and run along the side...

Coop run for free range hens?

You are right. I called and got an official measurement and it was 6” x 6” openings, big enough for a family of 4 to walk through (j/k)!

Coop run for free range hens?

Ok, that’s what I’m thinking, except I’ll wrap the perimeter 24” from the ground up. I do plan to put some wire in the ground, I planned to put the bigger welded wire on the ground since I’ll have a lot left over from a 330ft roll of the 2x6 spacing wire.

Coop run for free range hens?

What’s everyone’s opinion on this wire for the run? Looks like they are small squares vs. The 2”x4” rectangles. https://kencove.com/fence/detail.php?code=WH10-6-14 I plan to use this 1x1 on the bottom and above, use the material in the link above...

Coop run for free range hens?

Question for drainage in the run. If I were to put a French drain in the Run to the front lawn and put (let’s say)… 2” dia. pvc into the ground @2’ long filled with rocks, would this help with not having a flooded run on rainy days (water is wet, I’m just trying to think ahead and drain more...

Coop run for free range hens?

The coldest I seen it here was -5 and that took place in 2017. Since then, I’d say 0 to +5 is the coldest in my area. Yes, I do plan to have the overhang the main area of ventilation. The doors/windows is split between us and if we will need it in the summer. Yes, I plan to put a rectangular...

Coop run for free range hens?

Oh ty for the welcome. I haven’t quite decided on walk-in or not. I do want a raised coop so there is more room to walk and a raised coop would allow me to clean the bedding from outside, right into a wheelbarrow . I’ve seen some with a diy shovel to sweep out the bedding that I’ll likely make...

Coop run for free range hens?

I appreciate your well throughout reply. I do not have the material on hand, yet. I am taking into acct the material sizes. 5’ wide is not ideal but I don’t feel a 4’ wide coop is sufficient. I also want the run to match the coop width, which is why I am leaning towards the 5’ width. I do plan...

Coop run for free range hens?

This chicken run has me thinking, any experience with a run along the side of a house? Doing that would give them a roughly 5’x22’ that would add roughly 16’ of run to my fence. Roughly 40’ in length as I have a tree in the back corner of my yard. Or is it a terrible idea:old

Coop run for free range hens?

Our subdivision has fences so neighbors dogs, sheep, horses, birds etc… stay in the yard, re: chickens running down the road. We never see livestock on city property unless they are being walked w/supervision like the heard of sheep that stroll. I’ll look into that welded wire you mentioned and...

Coop run for free range hens?

Great feedback, thank you! Our winters do get cold but from what I’ve read and heard from neighbors, it’s not cold enough to add heat lamps. Our snow days in Meridian is in spurts so we will have snow for 5 days max on the ground. In our area, we have about 6 snow days through winter (ball...

Coop run for free range hens?

Thank you for the honesty. It is possible and this is my first go around at chickens. If it gets to the point of them overpowering my yard, I’ll relocate a couple. But the plan is, to keep them. I like the idea of keeping them in the run for certain seasons, I might go with a longer run after...

Coop run for free range hens?

The only way I’ll get more is if we buy a bigger property. Between now and then, this is the max hens I want hah. We already have a cockatiel and a 110gl reef tank that needs our attention:D

Coop run for free range hens?

Hello all, We purchased 9 one week old Brahmas and will only keep the hens. Hopefully at least 7 are hens. We will be keeping them as egg layers, not for eating. Many of our neighbors have free range chickens so there aren’t many predators in the immediate area (Meridian, Idaho). The plan: To...
