My coop design and build blog

We gave the 24 birds , 24 feet of roosting bars (a foot per adult bird). It seems they would rather huddle together. When temps increase and they grow in size,. Im sure they will like the added room.

My coop design and build blog

After 2 nights, the chickens put themselves to bed. That means I could open the space under the coop to them. I had it blocked off since I didnt want to be crawling under the coop on hands and knees to retrieve chickens that didnt know how to go back into the coop at night. This opens up...

    Our indoor fodder system

Im experimenting with a indoor fodder system that Im testing out for our 24 chickens. It will be great for our long winters so they get fresh greens. This should result in better eggs and lower feed costs and it seems to really occupy their time. Its super easy to do and pretty cheap.

My chicken forage boxes (for inside the run)

Here is an update. Our 24 chickens are in the run now. They love the greenery in the forage boxes I built. Clearly, I will need to increase the amount of greens I will supply them. My indoor grown fodder system is currently in progress and will be ready to start feeding them tomorrow.

Where your chick brooder is located MATTERS

One can either raise chickens in their home OR have a clean home but you cant have both at the same time. Ive been saying that in these groups for a long time and people laugh. If you have a furnace you are raising chickens in EVERY room of your home.

Where your chick brooder is located MATTERS

I belong to several chicken groups and Ive seen a pattern. I will preface this by saying, I helped raise our first flock of chickens 50 years go. We would raise between 50 and 100 birds a year. This year we are at a new location and I built a new coop and run for 24 dual purpose birds. Raising...

My coop design and build blog

Tomorrow we will move the 7 week old protein from the brooder to the coop. Today I finished adding the sand to the run and did a little more back filling of the job site around the coop and run to make sure we have good drainage away from the structure.

My chicken forage boxes (for inside the run)

We would like to free range the chickens in the summer but the eagles, hawks, coyotes, foxes, weasels, etc means we would likely suffer some losses in the flock. If I cant let them get to the outside salad bar, I will bring a salad bar to them in the run. If these two boxes are a success, I...

    My DIY coop cleaning tool

The latest chicken coop accessory I made for my wife. We will be raising 24 birds and the coop is nearly completed. I hoped to make her life easier. I wake up some mornings and roll over in bed and look at her and think to myself, just how lucky she is.

My coop design and build blog

We are getting closer to putting the protein out into the coop and run. Since it was a rainy day, I made 2 feeders and 2 waterers. One of each is in the brooder and they have taken to them very well. We will be able to remove the chick feeders and waterers from the brooder. These are no...

My coop design and build blog

Its spring so we are spiting our time between expanding the garden space on the homestead and finishing the coop and run. The chicks wont go in the coop for another week or two so I wanted to get the sand in the coop so it was dry by the time the chicks are added. When we add the 24 chicks...

Are you mentally prepared for this?

You do you. You do not have to like or agree with these cold hard truths. But there is no need for you to get emotional or upset for having read words on a screen (you read them on a voluntary basis.) In the future you may wish to not read what I write in an effort to spare your feelings.

Are you mentally prepared for this?

I do both, preemptive killing of known predators and predator proofing. Anything that would threaten my flock will perish. You do not have to agree or like it.
