I knew somebody who had 3 Barnevelders, all 3 laying, but one of them has such huge wattle and comb that people kept arguing with her it's a rooster! I would not give up on her as yet. Not unless there will be boy saddle feathers and he starts crowing. But then one of my Polish who laid for...
They all start with small pale combs and wattles, and the boys start color up earlier; pullets only go red when they are POL. Boys on average will have bigger combs and wattles, but there are some girls that can have as big combs and wattles as some boys, who comparatively have smaller combs...
It is very likely that the auctioneer knew it was a cockerel; they work for their client not the buyers. I once bought dozen of cockerels from market :) Fortunately we lived in the country, and paddock full of rooster was not a problem.
Pullets do not have such big red comb or wattle.
They are 4 days old; I bought 12 eggs, half Millefleur and half Porcelain. So, I expected to have basically 2 different types, but what i got is whole spectrum?
Day later, 7 chicks so far. One of the eggs was definitely not fertile, and I took it out last week, so that leaves another 4, but another 2 I was not sure about. When do I give up on them? I have sniffed them and cannot smell anything bad. Maybe candle them after dark?
OMG! It started. So far there is one yellow fluff ball and one egg looks like it's hatching, but I did not want to upset Saffron any more than I already had. It's nearly 7pm, so I will not go there again until tomorrow morning. Not that i am going to sleep. :)
Having puppies was so much...
