    Separate flocks meeting free-range

Colored zip ties... what a great idea! In fact, all I need to do is put ties on the four old hens, and leave the young ones alone. I'll give it a try and hope for the best. Thanks!

    Separate flocks meeting free-range

Sorry... perhaps I didn't supply enough information. They are in different coops because both coops are very small, and the hens are different ages. The hens in one coop are three years old and winding down in egg production, while those in the other are young, just starting to lay now...

    Separate flocks meeting free-range

I have four Golden Comet hens in one coop, and six in another coop a hundred feet away. They've never met. I've recently let the four out to free range, and it's worked out well, so now I'd like to let the six out as well. When they inevitably meet one another out in the field, do you suppose...

Would like anatomy diagram and explanations

Beautiful! Thank you! I just ordered the chicken model. It looks wonderful. Now the question is: After I assemble it, will my wife let me display it on top of the refrigerator??? Tim

Would like anatomy diagram and explanations

I apologize if this is the wrong forum, but I couldn't find an obvious correct place! I have searched here and via Google to find two related things, and I can't come up with them. Maybe someone here has a suggestion. I would like a detailed diagram of the INTERIOR anatomy of a chicken...

Euthenizing injured hen with injured leg

Thank you all for your thoughtful answers. She is now standing up, and she nibbled a bit of bread, so I am hopeful. I didn't clean the leg, as the skin was not broken. But the foot is badly discolored and swollen from not having any blood supply for several hours. Hopefully it will not get...

Euthenizing injured hen with injured leg

I'm a squeamish backyard amateur. One of my hens suffered a serious injury this morning and it may be necessary for me to put her out of her misery (I hope not!). Somehow (I can't imagine how) she got a string so tightly wrapped around her leg that it dug in and cut off the circulation for...

Comment by 'TimM' in article 'TimM's medium coop'

It's 32 square feet, so using the common fairly conservative rule-of-thumb of 4 per chicken, it can comfortably hold 8. Also, the perch is 8 feet long, and again using the rule of one foot per chicken gives 8. I added a completely (top and all sides) fenced in 4 foot by 12 foot run attached to...

Comment by 'TimM' in article 'TimM's medium coop'

Cindy - Thanks for the kind words! If you do build a coop modeled on it, please note my one big mistake: I did not have enough roof overhang on the sides. The overhang on the gable ends is perfect, but the sides should be at least six more inches to keep hard-driving rain from leaking in the...

Comment by 'TimM' in article 'TimM's medium coop'

I had to take away the dog bed warmer because they fought over who gets to sit on it all the time! I said this in the building info, but I'll repeat it for emphasis. I made just one real mistake, but it's a bad one and so easy to avoid. The side roof overhangs should have been several inches...

Getting my newly laying hens to use nest box

Good idea about the perch. One comment on Amazon also said that the perches were small, but most people loved these boxes. Rather than a heavy 2x4, I may fasten a 1x6 to them if they aren't using the boxes in a week or so. Thanks! Tim

Getting my newly laying hens to use nest box

Wow, thanks folks for all the useful information. I'll dig out some old golf balls and put them in the boxes. I intuitively anticipated one of these suggestions: disruption. Every time I've found an egg in a bad place, I've done something to that location to make it inhospitable for future...

Getting my newly laying hens to use nest box

Hi all. I have two dozen pullets just beginning to lay (and one suspected roo). The first egg appeared a week ago, and I've had about 8 since then. To keep them from sleeping/pooping in their nest boxes, I refrained from putting them up until the first egg appeared. I put up three (I have...

Crowing as gender ID, and danger of size difference

Thanks! You folks are wonderful. And I had no idea chicken sex was like that. Sheesh, I'm sixty years old and still learning about the birds and bees. Tim

Crowing as gender ID, and danger of size difference

Please excuse an ignorant question. I've kept three hens in a tiny backyard coop for many years, but I'm still a newbie in many ways. Last fall I bought two dozen pullet chicks of assorted breeds. They are now of an age that a few are starting to lay thinly. But this morning, when I went...

    Using Sand as Flooring- Help!

Thanks for the answer! I am certainly no expert, but DE scares me a little. I know that it is extremely fine and sharp particles, and I've heard that it is very bad for human lungs. I wonder about chicken lungs. Is this widely used? Tim

Hokum - I'll go to Agway and buy some wood pellets and give them a try. Thanks! Tim
