    Head shakes on Bresse roosters

Our Am.Bresse roosters shake their heads as well. With so many as curious as I am, it must be a curious tick they have.

Egg candling day 5 - fertile or not?

Tomorrow will be candling day for the eggs under our broody Colombian Wyandotte. The last time I checked she had 20 eggs under her. I found two eggs today that were laid on and around her earlier. Our Brahma Mama was almost covering her today and laid one of the stray eggs. There are multiple...

Topic of the Week - Which Breeds Are Best For….

Have your Am. Bresse been laying tons of eggs? Ours are 33 weeks old and they are laying 5-6 out of 7 days and they are usually very large eggs. I now have our largest AMB roo in that coop and hope to hatch some of their eggs to grow out for meat.

    Low night temps

Thank you Frazzled. I was thinking of using the electric sealed oil heaters that give a radiant heat. They look like old home radiators Or use the flat panel radiant heaters. I won’t use the lightbulbs they scare me. I know of people who lost everything due to fire. I can’t do that.

    Low night temps

This winter has been so extreme just last night we had 19 below with windchill 31 below. We have had nights and days where it has been 41 below with W/C. Our coop is dry with great ventilation. Our roofed run has wood chips on the ground with heavy plastic wrapped around it with ventilation...

Comment by 'The_1898_Homestead' in article 'Cold Weather Poultry Housing and Care'

I am so happy that I found this well written article. We are going into our first winter here in the very windy and cold upper Midwest. We have a tight coop, venting near the roof (summers and winters here are brutal) Our run has a roof and we are putting plastic on two sides east and west, and...

    Winterized Run and it STINKS!

We have wood chips out in our run and the chickens are always scratching in it and burying their poop. I am not sure if it’s what makes the difference or not But we have not had stinky runs even in 105* temps this p[ast summer. Our run has a roof and one of the sides is covered now with tarps...

Review by 'The_1898_Homestead' in article 'Repecka Illustrates Coop Ventilation'

The drawings are awesome. It makes me feel better about our ventilation. We have a shed roof on ours with vents on the low side facing north which is shady with trees, the high area is to the south. We have soffit vents on the south side and also top hinged windows. This is where our mostly...

Best coop/run ideas to reduce disease/protozoa

We have wood chips in both of our runs and really like how they are working. The chickens are constantly scratching around in them and I can see they are decomposing already and it has only been about 6 weeks since we put them in there. We will be adding a couple more inches before winter sets...

Thank you for the welcome. We have 36 chickens and the newest 11 are American Bresse. The oldest are Ameraucana and some BCM. Our in betweeners or as we call them the middle schoolers are a mix of various breeds. Many are dual purpose and some we just wanted for fun.

    New Chicken mama of 25

Chicken math is crazy! So a local breeder posted they had BCM and Ameraucana chicks ready to hatch. My heart started pounding as I clicked send. A few weeks later on the Monday after Easter I found out they had hatched and how many did I want. I was thinking 8, 4 of each breed. I ended coming...
