Male to Female Ratio for a coop that holds 8

Hey all! I’m new to raising quail and I’ve read that male to female ratio is very important for the quails health and safety. The coop plans we built house 8 quail each. And two coops stack so we can house a total of 16 but two different coveys. Would 7 females to 1 male be an appropriate or...

Clostridium in 3 day old chicks?

Did you ever figure out what it was? I have 15 babies that are a week and a half old. One has scissor beak and another still looks maybe three days old. The other 14 including the one with scissor beak are growing and like 5 times as big as him. They’re all getting adult feathers but this one...

    Weird behavior?

    Weird behavior?

I just noticed that he/she has a slightly misaligned. Could that be the issue? Maybe they’re uncomfortable

    Weird behavior?

I completely agree with you I don’t plan to reorder from them nor recommend them. This was my first time ordering eggs or hatching them and I’ll admit I didn’t do enough research and just chose one of the first sellers that came up when I searched online

    Weird behavior?

Yeah it has been really hard emotionally. I tried so hard to keep the babies that were struggling alive but losing half of the ones that hatched after only hatching half the eggs to begin with has been hard. But I also know it’s a learning curve and I’m new to this.

    Weird behavior?

The eggs are supposed to all hatch blue laying hens which when I ordered them I had not educated myself well yet and did not realize was a recessive gene rather than a breed variation. The seller claims 100% blue laying

    Weird behavior?

I got the eggs from Rising Phoenix Farms. Out of 72 eggs only 30 hatched. Of the 30 that hatched 11 had severe wry neck that prevented them from eating or drinking and they all died. Four dropped dead randomly. I mean like totally randomly. They were eating and drinking and playing and then a...

    Weird behavior?

They are cedar shavings! I’ll switch them out for pine but she was doing this before when she was only on shelf liner the first thanks! It could be the cedar shavings are making it worse but he/she did this with hen it was only paper towels and shelf liner in the enclosure as well. They do have...

    Weird behavior?

I’ll post a video once it uploads! They’re on 30% game chick starter crumble. It’s eating and drinking fine and acts normal most of the time but a few times a day does this weird routine. They are pooping the same as the others are and he brooder is a homemade set up with wood shavings and a...

    Weird behavior?

I hatched these babies 6 days ago and since they hatched one of the chicks has been randomly making this weird motion. It stands there and closes its eyes and throws its head back. It opens its mouth like it’s chirping but no sounds come out. It does that for a while and then stops shakes and...

    Help First Time Hatcher!!

Thanks so much for your reply! We ended up hatching 19 healthy babies, two that died for unknown reasons and 7 with wry neck that was bad enough they ended up dying from being unable to get themselves off their backs. I’m definitely going to try your humidity levels for this next batch

    Help First Time Hatcher!!

Thanks I have another set of eggs waiting to incubate starting tomorrow! I’ll try the higher temp. I didn’t think the color contributed to the hatching problems but it is interesting that the only one differently colored is also the only one that took forever to hatch but seems healthy! I am...
