    My 2nd Duck Hatch!

They have discovered the love of sitting on top of the heat plate. #25, the last duckling to hatch, is the only one I’m worried about. It’s just a little behind the others but it is eating and drinking so I’m hoping it will be ok. I’m adding molasses to the water and giving scrambled eggs for...

a few questions - duck eggs in lockdown

It does look possibly malpositioned. I don’t think you should feel bad because it seems like it it wasn’t going to survive if you didn’t do anything anyway. You could cover the egg with a half hard boiled eggshell with a safety hole drilled in top. I’ve never done that but I’ve read that it...

a few questions - duck eggs in lockdown

Sorry it’s a bit blurry, but this is what my duckling looked like when I opened the aircell (and after I wetted the membrane so I could see veins). You can see the bill is just barely through.

a few questions - duck eggs in lockdown

It’s very risky so I wouldn’t tell anyone to do what I did - but I thought my duckling wasn’t going to make it so I took the risk.

    My 2nd Duck Hatch!

Yes, I might try removing one heat plate during the day to give them more room. I can also move half the babies to a new brooder if they get too crowded. They’re doing great this morning!

a few questions - duck eggs in lockdown

I just wonder if it has internally pipped just a little. I had a duckling last year who internally pipped but then essentially gave up. When I opened the aircell, he was alive but his bill was just below the slit he had made into the air cell. So from candling, you wouldn’t realize be able to...

    new flock

If they don’t want to eat out of your hand, you can put treats in a dish and sit nearby. Then gradually move closer until hopefully they will feel comfortable taking treats from your hand. Welcome!

    My 2nd Duck Hatch!

This one is named Eagle. It’s egg number was 39, so I thought of launchpad 39 A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. Apollo 11 launched from there

    My 2nd Duck Hatch!

My favorite duckling is so tiny but she’s super active and eating a lot so I don’t think anything is wrong with her. They are sooo cute
