Thank you for posting this! My feed store received olive eggers from Privett and I have been curious what they may look like since the Privett website is currently down. This store had some pictures of Privett olive egger birds (chicks and adult hen) but no picture of the eggs-...
Thank you so much for providing your perspective and advice!
That's probably the most straightforward (and safest) approach for all birds involved.
I was hoping to find a way forward since I wanted to keep one specific chicks (breed) from the human-raised flock, but I'll shortlist the breed...
Fair! I saw this all as an "experiment" to see if this specific hen that was going broody every month could actually "rear" the chicks she was instinctually yearning for. I was annoyed having to "broody break" her monthly by putting her in the dog kennel in the run. She's a prairie bluebell...
Hi there-
Thanks for the quick response! A few answers:
I run a “compact” backyard (residential area) operation. The enclosed, predator safe coop/run is ~6’x10’ (60SF), the coop portion being ~6’x4’ and with 3 nest boxes (27SF total; so 87SF total in the enclosed area). They have daily access...
Hi there-
I’m hoping for some advice on chick integration.
I have 7 chicks, all the same age, some of differing breeds. Broody/mama hen is a Prairie Bluebell Egger. I used the night time approach for placing the chicks under her. The following early morning, this first-time broody hen rejected...
I believe Welsummers are auto-sexing - pullets have a defined dark triangle on top their head, cockerels have a blurred-edge (less defined) triangle. Check this video:
MPC will refund you if you received cockerels in your order - send them an email. It doesn't get you the chicken you wanted, but it's more than feed stores do.
Looks more like a pullet than the one in this thread (another "6 week-er")...
I think you have 2 (BBS*)LRWs. The blue lacing is "BBS" - 50% will hatch 50% blue laced (gray), 25% splash laced (white/smoky), and 25% black laced due to the genetics of the blue color. Chicken genetics/breeding is so interesting:
Black x black = 100% black
Black x blue = 50% black, 50% blue...
That another cool method!
Yeah, after I made that post today I did a bit of a deep dive into the current sexing methods and came across this recent technical research paper "A Review of Key Techniques for in Ovo Sexing of Chicken Eggs" (https://www.mdpi.com/2077-0472/13/3/677). Some methods...
There is, it's just not available/viable for backyard farmers yet. Maybe in a few++ more years!

Nice detective skills! Aren't chickens fun? 🥰 My first egg from my olive egger was speckled but over a couple of weeks she's settled into a nice light olive (on the right side)
Sorry guys, it’s been a busy few weeks! I’ve been taking the photos but not uploading them; this one will be a long one! 🐔🙃
I’m happy to report that we are now SWIMMING in pullet eggs! 🥰 But more on that below. As of now (19W/20W), I’d say 9/10 gals are laying judging from the egg songs...
Small teaser/update- I'm still here, hanging out with my girls as often as I can, and happy to say that 9/10 girls are laying by <20W!
I'm beyond pleased with how my little backyard rainbow is coming along 🥰
Longer post coming soon!
Old thread but I wanted to say thank you! This has been extremely helpful as I too have been a bit disappointed and disheartened with my first couple of eggs from my BCM, having heard that the "first eggs are darkest and they get progressively lighter". IMO these aren't even a 3 in natural...
How are your gals doing? I'd make sure they have enough calcium available (and sufficient D3 for absolution), and maybe up the protein (20%+) for a week or so and see if that gets things moving? You could also check for stressors that may be affecting your flock (predators lurking, social...
The Hoover's PBE link says it's a hybrid of Araucana x White Leghorn.
@MishMash7 - are they both laying blue now? Supposedly it's a lighter blue than a Ameraucana or Legbar
