    Will My Eggs Hatch

Hello! After such bad experiences ordering live chicks, I decided to try hatching eggs. I ordered 1/2 doz Black Copper Marans and 1/2 dozen Lavender Amerauacanas from one seller and a rainbow mix from another seller. I was at the post office today to try and collect the rainbow eggs as there is...

Ideal Poultry - High Mortality/Replacement Policy

Hey, thanks for checking in. I was able to get to the store the day after the thread and get grit. But, we still lost significantly more in the week following this thread even with grit and removing the shavings. One of the poults that died was clearly 1/2 the size of the others. So, for some...

Ideal Poultry - High Mortality/Replacement Policy

Yes, they're in larger boxes and only one lamp. The temps recorded here are just at the hottest location. The Narragansett typically quietly pile in a non-high heat location and quietly sleep. So, there are good temp locations around the brooder box

Ideal Poultry - High Mortality/Replacement Policy

Unfortunately, I am not knowledgable enough to know if it is or isn't. I felt around the crop and it felt a little squishy, but not full or empty?

Ideal Poultry - High Mortality/Replacement Policy

Yes, a towel is a good idea. I can throw one down. I've already removed the pine shavings, but will add a towel now. I assume the 2 that are already showing signs of issues will probably not get better at this point?

Ideal Poultry - High Mortality/Replacement Policy

At this point, none. Just got 24" of snow last night. I can't even get to the store to grab anything either. I just double sifted their mash to ensure there wasn't anything larger in there. And they're now in an empty brooder box. So, we will see how this goes. I need to do this for all of the...

Do I just keep them in an empty brooder box then?

Also, I asked for grit at the farmers union and the guys said that if I have mash then I don't need grit.

Ideal Poultry - High Mortality/Replacement Policy

Is there any way to makeshift grit? I am snowed in and cannot access a store any time soon.

Also, as noted, one cohort (Narragansett) are on the same bedding, same food, and same water and are having zero issues. So, I feel like this is an illness or genetic issue from the hatchery?

Tractor supply shaved pine - same as last year and I had no issue last year with them.

Ideal Poultry - High Mortality/Replacement Policy

What an insane 3 days it has been! I posted not too long ago about mat heating in addition to the heat lamp. For background, I ordered 30 turkey poults from Ideal and there was an issue with an oncoming storm where the birds were in an unheated mail truck for several additional hours during the...

    Heating pad and heat lamp

Yes, I expect to get a power outage on Saturday when we get 2 feet of snow. So, they’re inside where the generator cord is set up and the fire can add ambient room heat. They’re piled and quiet to one of the cooler sides of the box, so it looks like they are a bit hotter, but have a way to...

    Heating pad and heat lamp

Hello! We've had quite the morning. I woke up to the power being out the day that my turkey poulets arrived at the post office due to a freak snow storm. I was able to get them from the USPS and get home and keep them by the fire until the power came back on. The issue is that I set up a...

Crooked neck and wobbly, can’t fan feathers - Tom

Much better, actually! I gave him an aspirin a day for Sunday and Monday and then kept putting water near him with poultry booster and liquid B-12 vitamin (like kind of a lot). I also put cayenne pepper in his food and as long as he wasn't moving he was definitely eating and drinking. Monday...

Crooked neck and wobbly, can’t fan feathers - Tom

Hello - my male turkey was doing fine yesterday when I left for errands and he was walking around with his female turkey companion. When I got back she was aggressively pecking at his head and his neck was in a wonky position. He was and still is wobbly and can’t seem to stand and walk, keeping...

Hen in Distress - injured, but no sign of outward injury

Regarding the leg, it was completely non-functioning. Not going in a direction, but just hanging there and she wasn't engaging the claw like the other leg, which was able to grasp on my hand. Part of me thinks this was an internal injury or internal infection since there was no outside injury...

Hen in Distress - injured, but no sign of outward injury

I did give her an epsom salt bath in case she is egg bound. It’s only been an hour - I read that you should repeat the bath until the egg passes. But, I don’t want to stress her out more than she already is. Are the egg yolks and probiotics also for being egg bound?

Hen in Distress - injured, but no sign of outward injury

I have a hen (1.5 years old) that I noticed was lethargic in the tractor. I isolated her in a separate tub for the night as it was late and I didn't see any specific injuries - so, first line was to isolate her from flock. I did notice that one of her eyes was closed, but the other is alert and...
