She sounds stressed, a lot of the babies that this happened to died if I didn’t fix the problem. Do you have an accurate thermometer to make sure it’s not too cold or hot? I bought the paper thermometers but later found it wasn’t accurate and used a freezer thermometer. I changed my setup to...
The originals died due to temperature, I used a hot plate instead of a heat lamp and they couldn’t handle being out from under the plate because it was so cold in our garage. So we switched back to a heat lamp.
One of the originals has pasty butt but I have been wiping it
I just put brown sugar and electrolytes in their water. Our thermometer is giving out 80 on the side of the bucket so I’m assuming it’s around 95 or so in the middle, they’re not huddling together. They started huddling when I...
I’ve had such bad go with these chicks, I had 6 die on me so I got 7 more to replace them today and I see a couple of them look like they’re sleepy or lagging. Wondering if they’re dying or just sleepy? I’ve raised baby ducks with no casualties or problems other than one getting angel wing which...
They’re allowed to free range on an acre. It’s primarily a duck coopbut there’s three chickens. I put roosting bars in there for the chickens so they don’t have to stay on the ground and I’m in the process of turning an old rabbit hutch into a small chicken coop. Unfortunately it’s been snowing...
Pretty good ventilation, there’s gaps all the way around the coop along the top from the pallets that I covered with wire, there’s also a window and some holes in the coop here and there and the back door is left open all day. Six ducks one of the six is a drake but he’s very docile he’s a...
I agree to an extent but I’m planning on getting a black Jersey giant, doesn’t the black birds and it’s size deter predators especially hawks since they will think it’s a crow? Or is this a myth.We don’t get many predators here. But I do see bald eagles and hawks often enough.
they’ve been going in early since it started snowing sometimes they even stay in the coop during the day. I think once the leaves come back in the tree they might stop roosting there
He is a bully rooster, I believe he’s even mounting the ducks due to missing feather at the back of their necks. He’s also turned aggressive towards us, we will be eating him once we get a replacement rooster. I don’t have a picture of the inside but here’s our funny looking scrap coop it’s...
Does anyone have a chicken they hatched from a leghorn and an amber link/amber star? I’m curious to know what it looks like and what it’s temperament and egg laying is like
I’m trying to weigh out my options. I want a cost effective but self sustainable flock. Egg production is important and down the line I would like to have the option for meat production as well. Well I’m stuck between a rooster like a leghorn or a black Jersey giant. The rest of my hens are...
the coop door that lets them in and out. Everywhere else is pretty sealed and where it’s not there is chicken wire. Would I have to close the door during the day?
I found a bunch of droppings that aren’t chickens and I’m assuming they’re sparrow droppings since they’re white in color and lately I’ve been seeing many birds fly in and out of their coop
I think I'm just going to try getting them in the cool early! I guess I answered my own question. This was them tonight before I got them out of the tree one by one 😂
