One of my hens, 9.5 months old, has really slowed down laying the past couple of weeks. Through her laying over the past three months, she consistently went 8-9 days laying, a day off. Two weeks ago she gave me 4 eggs before a day off. Now, she has laid 2 eggs in the past 6 days, not having an...
I have sand in my coop, and I am wondering how it should be treated when treating the coop for mites or lice. On top of spraying the inside of the coop well, and changing the nesting box material (shavings), do I also need to change the sand? I am unsure if mites and lice can live in sand.
My girls will be 8 months old this week, and have been laying beautiful eggs for two months. A couple of days ago, I noticed that their calcium/grit feeder (one unit with dividers) had gotten the divider loose, and the calcium and grit were mixed together and there was not much calcium left. I...
What is the average number of eggs per week that you get from your Easter Egger hens?
Before buying (these are my first ever chickens) I read and read the hatchery's websites, and I figured that doing well would be 5 eggs a week from my girls, and that would be after they had been laying a few...
A friend took this pic of a couple of chickens she saw that were "outlaws loose and runnin".
They are both beautiful birds, but the one in front (white with black) is quite striking. Can anyone tell me what breed it is? Is it a white Sussex, by chance?
I am trying to think of ways for my girls to stay entertained to fight boredom. They have a little non-breakable mirror they like to play with now and then, but the little zylephone that came in a toy assortment does nothing for them.
But I started wondering if they might like a set of wind...
Does the rate of lay effect the longevity of lay? I am assuming that with a finite number of eggs, that It does.
I am a bit of a stats and spreadsheet geek, and I have started tracking my girl's laying. I have a camera in the coop and I know who lays each day, so I am tracking that to track...
One of my girls, who has only been laying for two weeks, laid an egg this morning that was the first "not perfect" egg I have had from any of my girls. Around the top/pointed end, the egg was rough, in a circle around the top. The area inside my red line was a shade lighter than the rest of the...
Today, I had to lock my girls in the coop for approx 5 hours while I went out of town. I had made a change and they needed to stay in their coop. They have stayed in their coop for 3 hours before with no problem. I noticed on my security camera in their coop that one of the nests had an egg...
Not my chicken, but I saw this story, and found it bittersweet. What a beautiful bond Peanut had with her owner.
CHELSEA, Mich. – The world’s oldest living chicken, who survived abandonment by her mother at birth, has died at the age of 21.
Peanut the Chicken died in her sleep in her...
I feel like this is a female, but want to get more experienced eyes on this one. An Easter Egger that is 25 weeks old. Not laying, or crowing. Not squatting.
Thoughts? Opinions?
Apologies if all of this has been posted, as I didn't see any recent threads on this topic.
It appears that the Avian Flu is back, and commercial flocks are already being heavily hit. I have linked two articles with the information.
I am new to chicken keeping, so I am wondering what I can do...
I have a 24.5 week old girl that has been laying for 9 days now. Today I got my sixth egg. I think it is the same one, as three are EE's, and all 6 eggs have been the exact same color. Also, she is the only one squating. If I have two laying, the other is not showing signs for me to pick up on...
I got my third egg today, and if it is the same hen, it is getting further and further from nest. First egg in a nesting box. Second egg on the coop floor. Third egg in the run.
Unfortunately, the camera in the run decided to have connection issues this morning, of all mornings. I have huge...
It happened! I got my first ever egg as a chicken owner. My 5 girls are 23 weeks old, and I figured nothing would happen until the days started getting longer again, so I quit stalking the coop watching for an egg. I guess like a watched pot doesn't boil, a watched chicken doesn't lay. Lol...
I am hoping that in 2024, I have things in order to move from the burbs, back to a rural area. (I miss rural living!)
Of course, I am day dreaming now about a larger coop, and more hens. I currently have 5 girls that are just over 22 weeks old. Three easter eggers and two olive eggers. My only...
I have a 22 (this coming Wednesday) with a white discoloration on her comb, with a bit of black. My immediate thought was it looks like it has been pecked on. But I'm not sure. This is the one of five, that has the largest comb. None of the others are nearly this far along with their comb...
One of my almost 20 weeks old girls (none of the 5 are laying yet) is pushing the wooden eggs out of the nesting box. Is there any particular reason for this? Other than the obvious of playing soccer, since it was the fake egg in the nest at the very front of the coop, and pushed to the far back...
Yesterday morning I was sitting on my back porch, enjoying a cup of coffee, when I heard a huge commotion from the chicken run, not far away. It was clearly distress screaming commotion. My first thought was a large snake. I got to the run, and didn't see a predator. I counted and all 5 were...
This may be a stupid question, and is out of sheer curiosity. (I'm a chicken noob, and their behavior fascinates me.)
I have 5 pullets, 11 weeks old today. Their two roosting bars are a little over 4 feet long. When I peek in at them at night after they have gone in to get settled on their...
