    Experimental & other Hatch-a-long

I'll be honest I had completely forgotten Smokey was sitting on eggs. Which is why I was surprised to see chicks in the nest this morning. All but one have hatched and the last has pipped. Now unfortunately more than half (silkies) have single combs. At this point I'm not sure if it's easier to...

6 weeks , boy or girl?

    I'm going to say cockerel.

    Roo or Hen?

    I'm leaning more towards cockerel.

Silkie x Sapphire Olive Egger mix

The mother is blue with leakage. Mixes can be paint too. Many other breeds can be paint. Paint is just a color. It's one copy of dominant white over black. The father would have to be the paint silkie because he passed on a copy of dominant white to his chicks.

Silkie x Sapphire Olive Egger mix

By grey do you mean the mother is blue or silver partridge which is sometimes called grey in silkies? My guess is paint or blue paint but it's hard to know until the feathers come in.

    Silkie

The paint is a cockerel. Leaning cockerel for the black as well.

    Experimental & other Hatch-a-long

7/8 of Chrissy's eggs hatched. 2 black, 3 blue, 1 of the frizzles, and a cuckoo or blue cuckoo male. Not sure why so many blue silkies all of the sudden. I was under the impression I only had one blue hen and she couldn't have layed all the eggs, but maybe my dominant white which I suspect is a...

    Silkie

I'm leaning towards cockerel as well.

Yeah, those are probably the silkies you're talking about. No doubt they'll be beautiful chickens. One of Chrissy's chicks hatched in the incubator and a few more have pipped.

    Experimental & other Hatch-a-long

Took a picture of Oakley's babies today. I think the mystery chick is going to be lavender. The white one almost looks dominant white. The feathers have a brownish off white color with flecks of black. That's odd considering the pen it's egg was collected from has no dominant white birds in it.

    10 week old Silkie chicks

I'm leaning towards the splash being the cockerel as well. But as Debbie said, they're still a bit too young to say for sure.

Thanks. That's the plan! I'm just not sure whether I should keep Chrissy and her new chicks separate from Oakley or put her back in Oakley's side of the coop. But they'd probably still try to steal each other's chicks.

    Experimental & other Hatch-a-long

The store bought eggs in the incubator were all unfertilized. I have 9 developing eggs left in there. 8 mutts/mixes from my relatives and 1 bantam brahma mix.

    Experimental & other Hatch-a-long

Oakley is officially off her nest with 5 chicks. 2 silkies, 2 mixes, and 1 mystery chick from the store. Chrissy has caused SO much drama in the past 2 days. She's a great mother and she'll adopt anything that moves but that also means she is OBSESSED with Oakley's chicks. She completely...

    Gender help please

    1, 2, 7, 10, 11 look like cockerels to me.

    Experimental & other Hatch-a-long

I checked Chrissy's eggs and thankfully they're still moving inside. A blue looking silkie hatched under Oakley. Probably a chick from my blue cuckoo Smokey. If it's Smokey's it's a sexlinked pullet.

    Experimental & other Hatch-a-long

I'm gonna be so mad if Chrissy just messed up her clutch that's due in 3 days. Oakley got off the nest with the 2 oldest chicks and Chrissy decided to leave her 8 developing eggs to sit on Oakley's 3 youngest chicks and unhatched eggs. I haven't been home for at least 3 hours, I have no idea...

A black silkie and a lavender chipmunk striped silkie mix hatched. Another silkie has pipped.

    Silkie mix?

It's possible, but considering the single comb is recessive it would be difficult to get rid of completely. When bred to silkie hens his chicks would have walnut combs like silkies are supposed to but all chicks would carry his comb, which they can pass on to their chicks and it can pop up...

    Silkie mix?

Just looks like a bad quality silkie. Maybe has been mixed a few generations back. To add, silked feathers are recessive as said above, but that could still mean his parents couldn've been silkie/silkie mix or silkie mix/silkie mix. Silkie mixes can be smooth feathered and carry the silked gene.
