Where your chicks after brooder and before coop?

Like the OP, I too have babies (3 weeks) that'd I'd like to get out of my house in the next couple of weeks. I was hoping to move them out into a large dog kennel that I'll cover in hardware cloth, some sort of roofing, and place next to the run. So, to clarify, they don't need an actual "coop"...

    Red Splotches on Easter Eggers

Thanks. Yes, I'm being very impatient haha I'm thinking the reddish coloring I'm seeing is just part of her overall pattern, but it do find it really odd and fascinating that red coloration in certain spots can be a male trait for EEs. Is it just testosterone-related? Learning new things about...

    Red Splotches on Easter Eggers

Hi! I've seen a few threads here and there that discuss how random red splotches, particularly on the shoulders, indicate that an EE is male. Why is this? What causes it? Would anyone like to weigh in on whether this appears to be the case with my bird? "She" is only 3 weeks old and has some...

Cuckoo Marans or Blue Cuckoo Marans?

Just for fun, I'll post pictures every few weeks. This is at 2 weeks. "She" is looking darker now that her feathers are coming in.

Brooder Plate in 70 Degree Room - Warm Enough?

Thanks, everyone! The ambient temp + brooder plate seems to be just fine. They've been happily exploring their pop-up pen and go under the plate for bedtime and little naps here and there. So far, so good 🤞I'm going to try opening the window near them to get them acclimatized to the outdoor...

Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Apologies if this has been asked a million times, but are Cuckoo Marans able to be feather-sexed at < 1 week? This was bought by MPC as a Cuckoo Marans pullet (vent sexed), but at 4.5 days old, I am questioning sex and breed, for that matter (looks more Blue). I've included a picture of my EE...

Cuckoo Marans or Blue Cuckoo Marans?

I will! They're also the only one of my chicks to have a visible comb. It's tiny, of course because of the age, but I don't really have to go looking to find it, if that makes sense. Really hoping that's not a sign of a cockerel. I think at 3 days old it might be too soon to tell.

    Lavender Orpingtons 12 weeks

My Lavender Orpington--who I got at 12 weeks--used to be very skittish, which surprised me because of how friendly Buff Orpingtons supposedly are. But I will say that at 3 years old, she's now much calmer and has moved up in the pecking order. It might be an age thing, where they just mature and...

Cuckoo Marans or Blue Cuckoo Marans?

Ah, never realized that! Thanks. I am so excited to see what comes of this little one!

Cuckoo Marans or Blue Cuckoo Marans?

Oh boy... This is embarrassing but I double-checked my order and lo and behold, I ordered a Silver Cuckoo Marans. At this point, I don't know what this little baby is except a Marans of some kind, which I'm super excited about. I have an Olive Egger/BCM mix and she is the BEST! So smart, hardy...

Cuckoo Marans or Blue Cuckoo Marans?

While we're on it, does anyone here think there's a chance I got a cockerel? I'm now reading Cuckoo Marans (if that's what "she" is) are autosexing. Not sure if this is the case with Blue Cuckoo Marans too, but I'm seeing a soft, diffuse spot on the head. This has me nervous it's a boy! Its legs...

Checking-In On Peeps - Post Here To Say Hello!

It is... Poor little baby... A Cuckoo Marans which could very well be a Blue Cuckoo Marans. She seems to be softer/grayer/bluer than I expected. Someone on the "breeds" forum says Blue. Can't wait to see!

Cuckoo Marans or Blue Cuckoo Marans?

Hi! Brand new baby chicks arrived and I'm wondering if this lady is a Cuckoo Marans or Blue Cuckoo Marans (which was my back-up). She seems grayer than I thought a Cuckoo Marans chick would be.

Checking-In On Peeps - Post Here To Say Hello!

Babies are here! One of the four sadly was DOA. Not sure I can place blame on the vendor (MPC) or bad luck... The other three are doing alright. The Green Queen is a little wobbly and the weakest of the bunch, so I'm keeping a close eye on her. She's already my favorite. The Cream Legbar is LOUD...

Brooder Plate in 70 Degree Room - Warm Enough?

Hi! Our day-old chicks are arriving in a couple days and I'd love thoughts on our game plan: We have a pop-up pen set up inside our sitting room and are using a brooder plate. The room temperature is usually around 65-68, but I can turn the heat up to around low 70s if need be. I haven't...

Checking-In On Peeps - Post Here To Say Hello!

Hi! 👋 I haven't been on here much lately, but still having a great time with our chickens. Like a previous poster, I'm getting new chicks next week! First time raising baby chicks. I expect I'll be on here a lot more with various questions, comments, and whatnot. Hope everyone is doing well!

    First Death: What to Do?

I give you credit for being able to do that. I personally wouldn't be able to handle it. It is a dark subject matter, but I appreciate that in death, animals (and humans) can give back to the planet.

    First Death: What to Do?

Yes, we try to make sure at least 90% of their diet is good quality feed. They rarely get treats (ex: grubblies, vegetables, fruit, etc)--maybe once every couple of weeks we'll throw a palmful in the run. They also get crushed eggshells about once a week (I fill a small container that hangs on...
