Hi there!
One of my girls appears to have a very small cut on the top of one toe. Pic attached. It’s dry, and I don’t see any swelling. I read some posts that advised soaking in epsom salts, applying triple antibiotic and/or wrapping in gauze and vet wrap. I can do those things…but I wonder if...
Two of mine just went through a hard molt, too, and looked similar. Upping the protein in their feed seemed to help! They were on layer (16%), with free choice oyster shell. They’re on an all flock (18%) now, still with the oyster shell available. Maybe it’s my imagination, but I believe the...
Thanks for asking! She’s made a miraculous recovery!! :) Crop clearing overnight now, and she’s gained almost 2 lbs over the past 3 weeks! I’m overjoyed.
Question about those hens who felt super sorry for themselves and seemed like they might not make it—but did. Did they make it with or without assistance?
After the vet tube fed Sunny Kaytee Exact, she seemed much improved. I don’t have the equipment or skill to tube feed her myself, but I...
Yep—it’s normal, and I see a ton of it this time of year, too. If one of my girls sits in my lap and preens, I’m totally covered in bits of feather sheath when she hops off. :)
Thanks! She wouldn’t eat egg last time I offered it, but it’s been a week, so I’ll try that again. I haven’t tried tuna yet and will.
She’s been inside for about 3 weeks. When all this started, I had her outside in the run, enclosed in her own pen area because she was indeed getting...
Just chiming in to offer some empathy. I’m 2.5 years into chicken keeping, and I love my girls. But I sure wish I had known about this group and read about what to expect before diving in. I didn’t realize that chickens like to die either. I erroneously assumed that if I worked really, really...
Also—the description of molting hens feeling sorry for themselves is so very apt. 😂 I’m pretty sure if they could complain to the management, they would.
Thanks to everyone who replied to my post! I really appreciate the guidance. I’ve learned so much from this group since starting my chicken journey. :)
Update:
Sunny had some very normal-looking poop last night. She appears to be feeling perky and has been pecking around her hospital crate...
Will do, and thank you! Makes sense about the feathers. I thought same—that it seemed unlikely for a declining/dying bird to continue to grow all those feathers back. Glad to hear you say that.
