Buff Orpingtons and heart attacks? Lone sister help too? Long post.

To date we have had 4 Orpingtons of either the Buff or Lavender variety, all hatchery girls and only one is alive and has made it past the 3 year point. Every other one has died before 1 or 2 years. Our last standing BO should have died last year, she has a problem with her reproductive system...

Do you Trim Head feathers on Polish chickens?

Thanks! I rolled her into a new flock that had a few polish and she is thriving without a trim. She has settled in and her craziness is completely gone. She is a very sweet and happy chicken now! I do miss her Mohawk some days though! She is a pretty awesome chicken!

    Tolbunt Polishes?

All 7 of the eggs developed, none were unfertilized. I was using a super cheap incubator that had a tough time with temp and humidity. Even after calibration I had a hard time keeping it stable, so I think that is why I didn't have more. As I candled all the eggs looked beautiful up until the...

    BLRW or GLW??

Oh, sweet! I guess I missed the last page. So much variation and phone cameras are not always the best. I can always tell a difference between my SLR and my phone. The colors are different :)

    Sexed baby chicks?

I vote with her! We have a CCL named Billie the Chick and she was what my kids called my chicken corsage, she sat on my wrist for most of her chickhood as a choice. She is now trained to fly up onto my arm for cuddles whenever I present it. She was also the only chicken I knew for sure was a...

    Tolbunt Polishes?

I figured I should update this thread. I did order from Omega Hills, not the chicks, but eggs. I received 7, hatched 4, sold one and had three left, all girls (3 was the goal). The girls are wonderful. Very sweet, friendly, affectionate. They don't have insane crests like my bearded BLP, they...

    BLRW or GLW??

I vote GLW, our BLRW was much more red at that age.

    Sand vs Pine Shavings

70% humidity would kill me now. I used to live in FL, and I can't even contemplate that now. It was 89% most days and I just dealt with it. The only way to tolerate 120 degrees is with 12% humidity.

    Help heat stress

The humidity will kill most of the benefits, you can try it, but evaporated cooling works way better under 50-40% humidity. Just a fan would be good though and I would put the frozen water gallons in too. They basically snuggle up to the frozen jugs and it is cooler in a small radius.

    Sand vs Pine Shavings

Maybe just our location, but sand works well for us, we are in southern AZ so it dries out super quickly if it gets wet and it works as a way of cooling things down in the heat because the sand works to increase the surface area and works as a evaporative cooler. I just rake up the poop every...

    Help heat stress

Freeze gallon jugs of water and place them in shady spots. Just drain about 3 inches out of the jug before freezing and leave the lids loose. We live in Scottsdale and have a lot of 120 degrees to deal with here and frozen gallon water containers are a staple, I put two in about 2 or three feet...

    Bumpy deposits on eggs

I have a girl that does this, our vet said she needs a "reset", and that once she takes a break for molting it should stop, if not it's genetic. Her eggs look identical to yours, but aqua since she is a CCL. I don't know if it will stop, but we have the calcium bead in there too. If she doesn't...

    Rooster Bumblefoot emergency

I agree with Wyorp Rock. There is an app called Televet and it is possible you can find an avian or exotics vet in your area and do a session through the app and they can prescribe antibiotics without you having to take your rooster in to them. I would search for exotics or avian.

    Help with sexing polish chick

OMG. That describes our Spots to the T. She is loud, snuggly and so much larger than her little chicken body. She is one of my favorite chickens of all time!

    Help with sexing polish chick

I love my tolbunts sooooo much. They are the best. They like momma time more than any of my other girls. They are also soooo freaking gorgeous.

    Help with sexing polish chick

I trim but I time it. Never after molt, they can bleed. I trim once I can see that the shaft end near their skin is white and not too close to the skin. Never pull them. I just get some sharp scissors and give them a tiny hair cut and I do it over days to see how the feathers lie.

    Help with sexing polish chick

I love, love, love them. I had to hatch them, they didn't have them at hatcheries and I saw them and became obsessed. I got my eggs from Omega Hills Farm. They are the nicest most cuddly and sweet girls ever.
