Hi there!
One of my runners has been acting a little unusual at times.
3 nights ago she was already in the house on a nest when I was herding in the rest of the flock. Normally she'd be out and about causing a ruckus with them. I was able to go in and pick her up which she normally never...
Thank you! That looks a lot like what I’m seeing. I sure hope that’s what they are. I am going to be shocked if the red roost mites are multiplying so rapidly in the compost!
I’m going to do the massive clean out just in case, but keep my fingers crossed that it’s more preventative. 🤞
Thank you so much!
We are going to strip the run down to the dirt as soon as we get a break in the rain. I bought several canisters of permethrin powder to sprinkle throughout. I plan on leaving just dirt for a while and continuing to powder the run before adding shavings.
I should have...
Hello, everyone!
A few months ago, I discovered red mites in the coop. I have been treating with Permethrin and Elector PSP, and am finally making headway in clearing out the coop.
The problem is that I am seeing hundreds (probably thousands in hiding) of mites on the ground in the run and...
Sorry for the late reply!
Yes! I’ll take some pictures today and attach them here.
I got fence boards and used the same pipe straps to attach them. For some sections I screwed a 2x4 block on the other side of the doorway in order to make sure the boards were secure.
The only downside is that...
Red mite resistance 100%.
I’m a paranoid chicken mama, and while we haven’t had a red mite problem yet, the peace of mind in knowing it would be way more unlikely for those little buggers to chew up my flock would help me sleep at night knowing my birds were sleeping well too.
Sure thing!!
I got metal pipe straps and used them to attach the wood frame to the top of the chain link. Then I used hurricane ties to attach the rafters to that frame.
I used 4 x 4‘s with extra 2 x 4 blocks on the front side and just two by fours on the backside to give the roof some slope...
Thank you!
I want to use a treadle feeder, but I have ducks and a cross beaked chicken who needs a deep dish to take her time eating… Have you heard of special needs birds being able to use a treadle feeder?
I’d try it if it could work.
Hi there!
We have rats, so we pick up food bowls in the evening, and we store feed in a couple different locations that are rat proof.
We have treats and supplements in a metal truck toolbox, and we keep the open feed in a metal trashcan with a lid and bungee cord.
The issue is that we have...
Hi there!
We converted a dog kennel (+ a few extra panels) into a 10ft by 20ft run for our ducks, chickens, and geese.
Here are some pictures of the process. I'm happy to share more details on how I designed it and what materials we used.
We've had it for a few years now, and it's been fantastic.
Update and hoping for more advice...
We started the Welsh Harlequin on Safeguard paste (about 1.25 ccs) for 5 days, but saw no improvement. That rules out gapeworm, yes?
In fact, her breathing is much worse. It went from a growly, gurgly sound, to now wheezing all the time and open mouthed...
My 2 year old Welsh Harlequin seems to have a respiratory issue going on.
A couple months ago I noticed her making a high pitched snicking like noise from time to time. It has gradually gotten more frequent, though I really only noticed it when she was eating or foraging, so I thought maybe she...
I went to get three and of course I ended up with four.
Fingers crossed I picked well and everything goes as planned :fl . (Not that it ever does with chickens. :lau)
So sorry for the delay in replying! Things got so very busy trying to sort everything out.
The good news is my sick little pullet pulled through! She is smaller, has a cross-beak, and is not what you'd call brave, but she is incredibly sweet and personable. She eats, drinks, takes dust baths...
