No, nothing that indicates disease. There has never been any widespread signs of illness. No runny eyes, no sneezing, nothing. I am under the impression that it could be poor genetics. We bought a production pack through TSC's website & they ended up being a strange assortment of barnyard mutts...
@rayrose
Sorry, I didn't include that they do have free access to layer pellets & oyster shell. We just keep them in a tractor to alleviate parasite load & to rotationally graze our pastures.
Another note, for the leghorn -- she did have some "encapsulated" poop yesterday. It was almost raw sausage-like (gross, I know). No blood or anything, but a sickly brown/green color.
Hello!
I've been having some issues w/my laying hens. They are almost two years old -- will be in May. I have lost two hens so far in the past month. The first one occurred while we were out of town for a weekend, so I didn't get to see the "buildup." All I know is that the day we got home...
She ended up abruptly passing away around the 7wk mark. I was not too surprised after talking with several folks here. Thank you for the well wishes. All the remaining have been doing very well!! We're at about 10wks now.
I believe this is a California White or Tetra Tint...uncertain. Anyone know if it looks more like a hen or rooster? (S)he is 7wks old.
The curly tail feathers and reddening comb are throwing me off, but I know it's likely part Leghorn, so comb will probably be large.
No crows yet.
I find that interesting. She was the watchdog until she started to act funny around week 3. She would always stand over the others like she was protecting them. Quite cute. I dont know what happened, but was definitely presenting as RSS: pale beak/comb, weakness in legs, stunted growth...
Just to update if anyone is watching, tiny chicken did not make it. Abruptly passed last night. Looks like it was ultimately failure to thrive. :confused:
Could be failure to thrive, then. I guess we'll just hope she catches up? I suppose that there's no reason to cull her if she doesn't appear to be in pain. I posted in the medical thread, but got no responses. Was wondering if this could be some sort of vitamin deficiency (and maybe it was never...
I mean, again, she doesn't act like she's weak or sickly. She's very active. No alarming peeping. She has never stopped eating or drinking. She will fight the others for food. No lethargy. I hope so, too. 😔
Oh, that breaks my heart. It's so odd. It is very active and eats high heartily. The others dont bully it for its size or anything. It's been outside for about a week now and is starting to feather a bit more than previously.
