I got some Rooster Booster in her with a syringe and she ate some mealworms this afterwards! What is the best treatment for lice? She is still not pooping, so I wonder if she is impacted? I want to give her another bath with epsom salt. Thank you so much for your advice. I hadn’t thought of...
My lavender ameraucana 3-year old hen has been having a real messy butt, has been lethargic but has been eating a little and drinking, following the flock. Today I gave her a bath- got her a clean butt- no smell. When I was towel drying her, I was shocked to find how skinny she is- I can feel...
Unfortunately, it wasn’t all unicorns and rainbows. Suddenly out of the blue, the more aggressive hen started fighting big time, in fact one chick was in the middle of all of it and got a badly hurt leg. I brought her inside my house and set up a brooder for her. After two weeks, she was able...
Here they are!! They hatched just at the right time because we went to bed, grieving the loss of our prized Swedish Flower Hen Roo by a predator, and when we woke up the next morning, we had four baby chicks!!
Both hens went into lockdown and hatched two eggs each! So I have four chicks!! The hens are getting along fine! Looks like a group effort! At night both hens sleep up against other with the babies underneath in one nest!! It is so sweet!! I’ll post a pic! I haven’t let them out of the coup yet...
No, they are not removable. I did candle some and some were fertile. I put those back. The hens have been really mean, lol, so it’s hard to get more eggs to candle. I marked all the fertile ones. Wow, that’s great you hatched 21 eggs! Each hen has more than 12 eggs under her. I know Sweet...
I have two broody hens both on different nest boxes in The Palace coup. One hen, Sweet Cheeks has been broody before and was an excellent mother sitting, then hatching 10 eggs successfully and all grew into adulthood. Last year the other hen, Puff Ball, only hatched 3 with extra help. I noticed...
They all free range during the day and she is a bit of a loner, mostly cause she is so curious and into everything and following us around! She almost went to town in the truck once! Your suggestions sound good, thank you!!
Our wonderful Leghorn Marshmallow has begun to molt. Most of the others have molted already including the Roos who have gotten new tails, in our relatively young flock. I saw Marshmallow shake and quite a few feathers flew in every direction. It was this evening, when I noticed streaks of blood...
Actually, this morning, she was trying to get out while I was feeding her AND she is laying on eggs- about 5!! She took them out of the original clutch!! Do hens know when eggs are viable??!
I am sorry I confused you-sometimes I overthink stuff. She is contained. She has the original clutch with her that I brought over and that she covered with straw. About 2 ft away from the nest, she is sitting like a pancake with a stinky eye and with no eggs. I would think if she is still truly...
She did so well last year when I moved her. Maybe you are right the clutch is old. Now, it looks like she is still sitting, laying on eggs she will lay herself??? She is still definitely broody. It is about 105 degrees here with no sight of cooling down. The eggs may still be viable. I have...
Sweet Cheeks successfully raised 10 chicks last year sitting on the eggs for 21 days. I had moved her at night into a private brooder.
This year she was on a clutch of 12+ eggs for 2 weeks. She was in The Place with the other hens in a nesting box. I moved her into the brooder last night. We...
In the incubator, the last 3 days before hatch are in lockdown mode. You take the turner out and increase the humidity to 70%. This is what I did. I hope it is not too humid though. I have no plans to turn it off, Mr. Early Bird needs friends! He/she chirps a lot! Thank you for your quick reply!
I am new to incubation and I hope some of the wonderful knowledgeable chick enthusiasts can help me! We recently lost 17 chickens to what we think are coyotes. We have solved this problem hopefully. Since we lost so many I let my white/splash Ameraurcana become broody. She had been sitting...
