Frizzle White Rooster in New Jersey Needs a Home

I just asked my daughter about the feathers. She says he does. I'll try and find a better photo. As for his temperament, we can pick him up and hold him. He is a little skittish of people and the hens peck at him also. The mother is a white Americana (Easter Egger) and the father a black...

    Thechickenprojects Chicken Coop

Welcome to our Coop Page! Chelsea's Coop While on a trip to Virginia, we stopped at a local Tractor Supply and a swap meet for chickens and ducks was going on. Our nine year old daughter put on the sad eyes and begged for a pet chicken. Not knowing anything about the care, we originally told her...

Unknown chick using the Broody Method..Any Ideas?

Hi Everyone! Sorry for not replying sooner. The second egg hatched two days after my post and I'm finally getting around to uploading photos. I let momma and chicks be by themselves for a week. Today when I forced my still broody bantam to get out and walk, I noticed she was straining to...

gunnarmcc, I can't give the color of the skin yet. My wife won't let me pick up the chick and bother mom until she knows for certain if the other egg will hatch. Thanks for replying so quickly. I looked up the black cochin breed and this chick definitly has the same markings on its nose. The...

Unknown chick using the Broody Method..Any Ideas?

Hello everyone! My frizzle bantam decided to go broody at a year old. We decided to let her try and hatch some eggs as long as she was just sitting around. I stopped by a small farm that had a sign for eggs and asked if they had any bantam hatching eggs. The older lady walked to her coops and...

I purchased an EE from Agway two weeks ago with almost the same markings. Unfortunatly, it died suddenly this weekend. We called it a "chicken hawk" because of its markings.

    Sexing Buff Orpington chicks

Thanks for all the replies! So far, its a 50/50 reply on the roo so I guess I have to wait a little longer to find out. Greenfamilyfarms; when I purchased the birds I thought the white one looked different. I guess someone missplaced her when looking at all the chicks. My daughter really wanted...

    Sexing Buff Orpington chicks

I bought two Buff Orpingtons from Agway. After viewing other posts I'm wondering if the gold one is a roo. Anybody care to give an opinion? The gold one is about four weeks old and the I'm guessing by the late feathering that the white one is three weeks. I'll try and show the comb and waddles...

    Poop Board?

I use two plastic trays designed for flower pots. They are 7 inches wide by 36 inches long. I also used chicken wire under the roost to keep the birds from walking in the droppings. All I do to clean is remove the trays, scrape in a bucket and replace. The large, side clean out door helps in...

Quote: Timgrahl, I live in New Jersey and have a 4 x 4 coop with four hens and one rooster. The coop has ventilation and I do not heat it. How bright does my light need to be?

I use a 75 watt energy saving bulb. I think it only uses 15 watts of power. Right now, it goes off at 8:30pm. I have it hanging in the run right outside a window in the coop. ( 4 x 10 foot run) My only concern is to see how the bulb works in the winter. I know the older ballast type bulbs did...

    Chicken Losing Tail Feathers...PICS included

Thanks for the reply. There are no rats or mice in the coop. The space issue is not a problem, there is plenty of room. I don't see any other bird plucking her feathers. I will check her tomorrow for lice and mites. I might even dust her just to be sure. Thanks for the help.
