Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

Randy's sister here - just so you know I am not letting him get rid of the two yellow legged youngsters (and a normal legged sibling, and 1 other original hen). These yellow legs (and their sibling) have turned out to be the most friendly chickens we've had (and they LOVE me!), so they are...

    mixing different age chicks

I had a lone Wheaton chick that was only a few days old that I put in with two 3-4 week old female chicks, and there was no problem. Actually the little chick literally "walked all over" the older girls. Although the wouldn't let the chick sleep under them like a momma would do, every time I...

Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

This is just too funny so I had to post . . . check out the link : http://frenchmaransclubaustralia.yolasite.com/notes-on-breeding.php If you go down toward the bottom of the page, where they are talking about Wheatons and comparing two hens that are standing on a log (one with too much...

UPDATE post 37 Not the kitty CATS you want to see in your yard GRAPHIC

Choked me up a little bit too, but I understand. You do what you have to do. I had to shoot a coon that had killed almost half of our flock, and I cried afterward too and said a little prayer for it's soul. But I'd do it again, if I had too. And I'd cry again too!

I would bet the date doesn't matter for Randy, but the 23rd would be better for me. The last Friday of a month is always busy for me at work, and I like to take off several hours early the day before a show to get everything together. 8-1 works fine, but I wouldn't want it earlier than that...

Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

Hey Randy - Just looked at that picture again. Are you sure that isn't our current "bachelor" Roo? It looks like he's in the old brooder/marans area, and our other group of bachelors was in the tractor coop area. I don't remember having other males in that area close to other marans...

Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

Berkeleysprings sister here - yes, freezer camp! Can you believe it. And that roo was one of the ones that used to follow our mom around all the time. Maybe next time he'll listen to me and not rid us of the roos quite so quickly! What do you think? You think he'll listen to me now...

Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Quote: Do you ever check your pm's? I put the 17 eggs in the bator and I have 1dozenand 1/2 to hatch around Thanksgiving. We only need around 10 more if that many. Do you want some chicks instead of eggs? Hey, Tanya. Randy told me about your pm's and offer for eggs. That's really nice...

    Dark Egg Breeds Thread

Sister here - I actually hate guns, have only shot a handful of times but got that sucker in the first shot after I grabbed the gun from dad (and ran in the house to re-load!). It's amazing what you are capable of when something is killing your birds. Granted I was only about 10 feet away...

Dogs and cats - Why is it ok for cats to kill things for fun?

Quote: Blackbird - that's just what I was thinking. I hate the idea of anything killing anything else, but that's life isn't it? If cats didn't kill birds, mice, chipmunks etc . . . would there be a population explosion that would cause a whole host of other problems? If dogs, didn't...

Thanks everyone. The chickenstock was great. Our Uncle can't stop talking about what interesting animals there were, way beyond the chickens that he knew would be there. And our Dad keeps saying what nice "chicken friends" we have. Thanks to all who bought birds from us and all that...

Chicken has limp legs, won't/can't stand up! HELP!!!

Sorry for your loss. I just had to put one of my favorite hens down because she was exhibiting the same symptoms. After days of vitamins, she was still going down hill.

"we lost our hen Lucy today"

Quote: Personally, I don't trust any dogs (even my own dogs or cats) around my chickens. A number of years ago, my small shih-tzu got a hold of one of my girls and there were feathers everywhere. Luckily I was there when it happened and was able to intervene before she got hurt, but it...

    Sole Survivor what to do?

I had a single chick that I raised for a few days before finding it a broody with other chicks about the same age. What I did was moved the brooder into my "TV room" so that I could spend time with it when I was around. I also found a small stuffed bear to put in the brooder with it, and...

Tanya - what time are you going to get to the chickenstock by? At the growers supply in July we parked in one area and set up in another. Is this going to be the same deal or do we park & set up in the same area? So exicted about tomorrow! Unfortunately both Randy and I have to work today...

HELP!!! My OEG is down and can't stand!!!

BTY - there are a number of people out there that are having the same problem/issues with their birds from what I have been able to read on BYC, but no one has come up with the "ah-ha!" moment as far as a cure is concerned. It almost makes you wonder if there isn't some countrywide...

HELP!!! My OEG is down and can't stand!!!

I am currently going through the same thing with my 4 year old hen. About a week ago I found her just sitting in the pen, unable to stand up. She is bright and alert, no sneezing or congestion, eating and drinking normally, but she just can't get her legs underneath her. if she tries to...

Two dead chickens in two days please help.

. . . also, I have heard that any potato peals are bad for chickens, so no more potato peals. My girls do love mashed potatos, and have never had a problem with that. I have heard on BYC about molasses flushes for things like botulism, so maybe if they were poisoned by the peals that would...

Two dead chickens in two days please help.

You might want to try some vitamins for the chickens. Maybe some Poly-visol without iron. Yogurt too is good for the gut. Also I'd check out your remaining birds to make sure you don't have a bad mite infestation, since this seems to be the year for it. And are you sure that a weasel...
