Actually, I think that's the secret. They can 'pullet" apart. If I throw out a bunch of weeds, they're indifferent, tasting here and there. But if I step on it to hold it down, they dig in till it's gone.
I pour my extra starter into a skillet and make pancakes which I cut into thin strips. My girls go wild for it and it's such fun watching them run away with their prize.
Have you considered Zinnias? They grow practically anywhere, are very pretty flowers and my chickens don't bother them at all. Not even a nibble (after the seedling stage, of course)
