The Story of Matilda the Marans or How I Thought My Chicken Was Gonna Kill Me

I’m writing this story because after I told it to my daughter, she couldn’t stop laughing out loud and told me I needed to share this story with all my chicken enthusiast friends. So here it is! We bought Matilda the Marans three days ago as a companion to our teenager rooster Mario. Mario’s...

    Grass clippings in the run??

Sorry but I disagree with part of that 9 point list and I'd like to elaborate on a couple of the points. Old timer chicken raisers like my Mom who as far as I can remember kept chickens and never had a sick one always feed the potato peelings to the chickens. Now I'll grant you our potatoes...

    How to tame Roosters?

I think yours is the best advise of all. Roos will be roos, and by doing the "Walk of Shame" your letting him know your in charge but not his enemy. So far all my young flock are friendly but as they grow and come into their breeding age I will keep your advise in mind. Really like that "Walk of...

    Grass clippings in the run??

I go by the fact that in the wild they would be eating grass, weeds, of all lengths and bugs. Not only do I give them clippings but when I weed the flower beds and garden they get the weeds. They love them and I rake the out the next morning so as not to make their coop messy with rotting...

It is amazing how different each and everyone of them are. My Mom had chickens when I was a kid and I helped her with them, but I going back 50+ years in my memory as to what to do. I remember things everyday that I had long since forgotten, but now that we are retired we're enjoying watching...

How long can you leave those leg bands on? Do the other chickens peck at each others leg bands? Honestly there is only one out of my ten that I can recognize, that's the littlest scrawny one, who is the friendliest, smartest, and bravest. The first one to try everything and always stays with me...

    Gender Copper black maran chick

My Black Copper Marans are 7 wks old now and from your pic I would say you have a hen. If the comb gets bigger and pinker or if you start seeing the waddles over the next 3 wiks it's a roo but right now looks like a hen. Fingers crossed!

    Is this normal?

Thanks for the insight. That makes me feel better. I just would be sick hearted if I did or didn't do something correctly and they got hurt or die. I wish they had a mama hen to look after them as she would be better at it then me. I can't wait until next year when these babies are old enough to...

Yeah! I love 'em and they didn't have a mama hen to brood them and teach them things I guess is why they seem a little dense but I hope they learn before they drown or shiver to death. They seem to warm up to me when I went out to check on them after the storm and they did stay in the back of...

    Is this normal?

Okay, thanks. After the thunderstorm I went and checked on them as I was afraid they got to chilled. They seemed to be good and dry and much more tame and trusting of me. They each even let me pet them. The little hen that I spoke of as the smartest one even jumped up on the roost to get close...
