Great article. I have a solar door so they come out at dawn and are in their coop at sunset. It works great and you don’t have to be there exactly when they wake up as they have come out on their own.
My chickens are molting and eating maybe 25% of normal. I hate it. One is almost all bald ( she was broody before this). I just hate this. I want them to eat. No eggs for over a week. I’ve upped protein but they don’t eat much anyways. Feathers everywhere. I did not know this about...
I have Brahma hens, it is January, and they are 7 months old today. I feed them laying hen feed. I have had no eggs and i heard they are a slow breed to hatch eggs. Any advice to help them along...or just let them be.?
I have 2 greyhounds and one has a huge prey drive for the squirrels , cats and rabbits. Part of my yard is sectioned off to separate my chickens From them. However I made mistakes and forgot to close the pen. You know what the dogs left them alone...maybe because they see me holding them...
2 questions...should I put a bale of hay in my coop shed for insulation as they have no heater? Also I’m waiting for my first egg but I put hay in nesting boxes and they just remove it each morning...once they lay will they stop taking all the hay out of nesting boxes?
So yesterday was 16 degrees and water didn’t freeze over completely for 6 hours with bottle too big to bobble. I added even more salt today and now the bottle itself is really not freezing. No salt is going into the pan as it’s enclosed. It won’t be in there every day as the temp will rise...
UPDATE on a metal dog bowl with a bottle of salt water laying inside dog water dish with the bottle being too big to lay all the way in: Well I went out at around 3 pm After an 8:00 a,m start with it filled. It is now 16 degrees. There was still a tiny hole that the chickens were using to get...
I just bought a rubber one now. Also I have a metal dog bowl with a salt water bottle half submerged. It’s 19 degrees and a thin layer of ice that they break through and drink from still had formed. My other dog bowl with water and no salt water bottle has been out for an hour and a half and...
Gosh obviously the person who markets a solar water heater for chickens would make millions as we are all sitting around waiting for one to be made...you know it’s not that hard. What did they do 200 years ago with no electricity?..
Hi
so I am noticing the run is building up in poop. It used to be grass and now just dirt. Should I put down wood chips. THEY SEEM TO SCRATCH THEM AWAY. MAYBE I NEED MORE.
So, what do you put down on the floor to make it warmer? Do you build little books in coop so they can cuddle. I have 8 x 6 she’d turned coop so kinda big. Should I have bales of hay all over?
