Sorry for the delay here, folks. My Pekin is functionally fully recovered. Her right leg seems to be (permanently?) swollen, but the skin is no longer tight or hot. She doesn’t limp and she’s as active as ever. I never did take her to the vet or do antibiotics. I used the epsom poultice and...
I picked up this Silver Appleyard at the feed store a few weeks back. They had him discounted because he was a male. I have assumed it’s a drake but yesterday I heard the quack! Do SA hen’s come in drake colors sometimes?!
Can anyone recommend a brand and supplier for a layer feed for quail? I typically get feed at my local North40, but they only have a gamebird starter and grower/finisher. I have my other birds on Purina Flock Raiser. Anybody use an all-flock feed for laying quail?
Interesting! A cattle panel roof? Would at least keep cats out, and it would be easy to fasten… the pen is 8 feet wide, so it would probably also be easy to fit them. Thanks for the idea!
Hey community,
Last night I woke up to the sound of my young goose squealing and the ducks clamoring. Normally I wouldn’t get out of bed, but then I heard some hissing, so I ran out to the yard. My wife saw the cat running away along the fence. Thankfully we got there before it went after any of...
Also, to add to your repertoire, I’ve been using an epsom salt poultice on the swollen parts and wrapping it in coban. After just a couple days I see a noticeable reduction in swelling. I’ll attach a picture of what I’ve used. Just thought I’d share what I’ve found helpful. I let her soak in a...
Just as a word of encouragement, I am sure benefiting from all your work recording this. I have a Pekin With almost identical situation and symptoms! Thank you so much for taking the time to share your research and experience for our benefit!
Still waiting on the antibiotics. Should be here today. Still, the foot is looking MUCH better. I’ve been having her soak it for 20+ minutes each day, then I put an epsom salt poultice on the foot and wrap it in Coban (vet-wrap). Each day the swelling seems to go down. She’s also acting more...
You knew my next question — thanks for the link to the instructions! I’ll keep you posted as it progresses. The swelling does look better just from cleaning, epsom poultice, and wrapping. I’m sure the antibiotic will help speed things up though. Thanks again!
I ordered the Cephalexin that you recommended, from chewie.com. My duck is a full-grown jumbo pekin (9 months old), but I’ve never weighed her... I could try to do that tomorrow. Thanks so much for your help, Isaac 0!
