Official BYC Poll: How Do You Protect Your Chickens From Predators?

Here in Texas, we can kill any animal that gets on our property and kills or destroys anything on it! I put a lot time and money into my chickens and any animal, especially a dog, goes after them, it'll be met with a shotgun!!

    Hen struggling to breathe

I agree mostly with what Allsfairinloveandbug. When some of my hens's got respiratory infection, I had to give them shots in the breast area but they get better.

Please help - entire batch of chicks dying suddenly - TWICE

Hmm, interesting! From what I've read, at the beginning, the only thing I notice that may be causing your problem is Nature's Best Feed. It seems like you're doing everything else right. I incubate eggs year-round and have never had that problem. Once the eggs hatch, they go in a clear plastic...

Important for anyone who loves their chooks

Yeah, here in South Central Texas, the heat has been pretty bad, too. I have this daily routine I follow about 3 times a day, sometimes 4 if it's extremely humid. Everybody gets a bath! Rabbits, Quail, and chickens, everybody! Of course you have to run the hot water out of the water hose before...

    Broody breaker 101

I usually don't let my hens sit on the nest when they go broody because when they get up to eat, sometimes, they always get on the wrong nest and I have 4- nest box about 2' off the ground. However, I did finally let one sit in my garden run. She has about 6 eggs under her. I had put an old milk...

How do you clean the feeders and waterers?

I started using open waters, 3KillerB's, about a year ago. It's been a lot easier for me to take care of. Got tired of messing with them store-bought waterers. I bought this 3-gallon, I guess you can call rubber pan/bowl, at Walmart, and put it in the enclosed run, on top of a cylinder block and...

Have the chickens, now I need a coop. Please help!!!

My greenhouse is pretty much built that way and is the same length and width. I bought 1" PVC pipe and some about a 1 1/2' rebar, drove them in the ground with about 6-8" sticking up, and just put my pipe over, at both ends, making a hoop. Didn't need any blocks because my drainage is not that...

    Broody hen advice

I tried something similar. I put her and her eggs in a pen and nest I fixed up in the greenhouse, and she did not like that at all. She raised cane and broke most of her eggs.

So I bought 30 chicks to raise and sell but I’m having trouble selling them where I live what should I do?!

I incubate my chicks and sell them when they're pullets on craigslist, but I sold mine for $8.00 apiece, so they went fast. Mine are of the California White breed, mostly. I just do it for fun and sometimes to replace older hens. I have the folks buying them, come to the house and get them and...

Week olds...dust baths, heat and bedding

My chicks don't get dirt baths until they're old enough to be in the run with the others. I don't see the need for baby chicks to have dirt baths and mine are always healthy. And the same with the grit. That's just my 2 cents on the subject! ;)

    Broody hen advice

I appreciate your perseverance, Junior67! However, I don't do that. I had the same problem. I have four nest box and every time a hen went broody it would get up to go eat or drink , it would come back and sit on another nest, plus she's warming up the eggs off and on and in the heat, you dont...

Have the chickens, now I need a coop. Please help!!!

I think using one of those pre-fab metal/aluminum buildings is more trouble than it's worth! My coop is just 4'w x 8'L x 7'H and is built out of pre-treated 2' x 4' and wood paneling. It has 3/4" wood floor and OSB, tar paper and sheet metal for the roof. Plus, it sits on blocks about 1' off the...

Don't worry about lil mistakes. I read it fine! If people are smart enough, they can read between the lines. You did a good story! In my case, I use a clear plastic container, 36"H x 18" W x 18" Tall, I bought it from Walmart for $21.00, and I put about 3-4" of Pine Flakes in it, the lil...

    Help with chicken diet

Hmm, for one thing, weighing chickens once a week or anytime, is new to me. I never weigh mine, don't see a need for it, unless I was showing them, which I don't. I have 20 chickens and I used to have a homemade feeder that I could put 2 1/2 gallons of feed in but them rascals would practically...
