Haven’t been on in FOREVER but got tagged in this so I thought I’d join! This is my baby PB&J (Parker Bryan & Jinks)! Try to guess where that name came from, lol. He’s a Beefmaster x Charolais cross born in September of last year who I plan to show at county in January. Our first jackpot is in...
Anybody know what’s going on here? One of our two Copper Marans has started laying eggs like this. This is the second one we’ve seen like this. One side of the egg looks perfectly fine but the other side has a chalky white ring that doesn’t wash off. The entire shell feels thinner than our other...
Thank you all for the input! We were told by the lady who gave us the egg that she had Lavender Ameraucana and Maran hens, and only Lavender Ameraucana roosters, hence the confusion on how we got a blue egg out of what we thought was a brown layer, but now seems to be an Easter egger. It’s going...
Hey there! We recently got a purebred Lavender Amerucauna rooster from a lady who could no longer keep him. She sent us along with an egg appearing to have come from one of her Ameraurcana hens. She also has Maran hens but no roosters of that breed. However, the chick from the very blue egg she...
Is there anything safe we can put in poultry water that’ll prevent/slow the growth of algae? We thought about using
55 gal rain barrels for waterers, but don’t want to have to empty & scrub them out every few days.
Please don’t hesitate to do something with the drake. We lost our favorite female to an overactive drake a few months back. We’ve since given him to a friend of ours to keep on their pond and I would’ve done so sooner if I had known.
So far, 4 of the Copper Marans, 1 Jersey Giant, and 1 from our original flock have shown signs of wheezing, gasping/shortness of breath, some form of lethargy, and the chicks have puffy eyes. The Cooper Marans are being brooded inside, as they did not get along with the first batch when we tried...
Yes, we’ve added three new batches within the past few weeks. We got 2 Easter Eggers, 2 Olive Eggers, and 2 Crested Cream Legbars, all around 2-3 weeks, as one batch, 8 Black Copper Maran chicks, less than a week old, as another, and for the last, 11, 2 1/2 month old Jersey Giants.
What can we use that’s over the counter for treating respiratory infections in chickens? I’ve seen a lot of people recommend Baytril but I’m hoping for a slightly cheaper alternative that I can get a little sooner. Thanks!
Sorry about that, I guess I’ve just used to it enough that I forget to mention it for others. Any suggestions for it medical wise? I believe I have some triple antibiotic ointment that I could use. Is it worth picking up some blue kote?
One of our Copper Maran chicks has what looks to be a dead toe. It’s about a week old, give or take a day or two. We picked up eight chicks total about two days ago, but didn’t notice the toe until we got home. Just in the last hour or so, the rest of the chicks have started picking on the...
I’m not sure, but we’re also getting black copper marans and possibly some Easter or olive eggers. Our goal is to get some variety in our eggs since all three of our current hens lay light brown eggs.
Are you talking chicks fresh from the feed store? I think as long as there’s shavings or some type of fresh bedding they’ll be exposed to whatever was left rather slowly so I don’t see it being a problem.
This is perfectly normal in my opinion. From what I’ve seen, the bloom dries not long after the egg is laid and isn’t visible, so I think this is just a case of calcium deposits. Calcium deposits are just the hen’s way of getting the extra calcium out of their system. Like @aart said, it’s most...
Wow, I totally did not read the first post right, lol. That would’ve answered my question. These things are normal to worry about, I know I had a heart attack when our first ducks started molting. It’s all a learning experience, and a wonderful one at that.
