Thank you both for the replies! I'm sorry I ghosted you; I got distracted! The genetics make sense. It's been interesting watching them grow up. Generally they all look similar, but they're all a bit different... lol
We had a broody hen that we couldn't break, so we finally gave in and let her have her clutch. The eggs she hatched were Barred Rock over Sapphire Gem.
I understand a barred roo will pass on one set of barring, and I seem to have concluded that Sapphire Gems are Blue Rocks over Barred Rocks...
Well, I’ve been working hard on my new coop every chance I’ve had. And I’m loving every minute of it. It’s been abnormally cold around here and this coop project has corresponded wonderfully with slightly warmer weather.
I studied a lot of coops I found online, both here and elsewhere, and...
Well, it's about time I got to post in this thread. I thought the heat would keep the girls from starting, but at least one of them tried to prove me wrong. Not sure whose it is, other than ruling a few out by color. Got one while I was at work yesterday, and another today! Yay!
They are a...
My gals are 18 weeks old. I went out to check on them this morning (hoping for an egg). When I got to the coop I found every single one of them wandering around the coop. The have free access to their run, and are always outside when I go out to check on them. Is there any particular reason they...
After looking around and researching, I decided to build a PVC feeder. Home Depot sells 4" pipe in 2' sections and in 10' sections, so I got 10'. I had them cut it in half at the store to make my life easier transporting it.
Part of my goal was to be able to fill the feed from outside the run...
Well, in the interest of keeping ya'll updated...
Louise just crowed. Not that we needed confirmation that she was a he; but it's official now.
Now I just have to convince my neighbors it's cute and desirable to have a rooster in the nieghborhood. =/
No new news on the GLW yet.

She is pretty skittish. She's also curious, which makes for some great entertainment. She'll investigate something and then freak out when it moves, etc. She's nice to look at.

I can do that. We are really hoping against it, though. We are allowed to have chickens, but I think out neighbors would not be the biggest fans of all the noise... I thought they would be crowing by now. Why aren't they?
We ordered an all female run of chicks 15 weeks ago. Best we can tell, we got 5 gals and 1 guy. We are hoping we're off base and they are all female... What do ya think?
F - Laverne (Light Brown Leghorn
F - Thelma (Blue Andalusian)
F - Shirley (Gold-Laced Wyandotte)

huh. I knew EEs come in various makes and models, but I wasn't aware that barred was one of them. I guess this means that mypetchicken.com isn't conspiring against me after all... =] Thanks for the pics - that one of the hatchling looks exactly like ours did.
Best I can tell MyPetChicken.com pulled a fast one on us. We ordered 6 chicks, all of them different breeds. We ordered a Light Brown Leghorn, Blue Andalusian, Red Star, Rhode Island Red, Easter Egger, and a Gold Wyandotte. The Leghorn, Andalusian, Wyandotte, and RIR are all accounted for. That...
Yay! We got 6 different breeds: Red Star, Rhode Island Red, Light Brown Leghorn, Blue Andalusian, Golden Wyandotte, and an Easter Egger.
I have an album on Facebook that ya'll should be able to see here...
