I was given a chicken that has turned out to be a cockerel. I cannot keep him. I live in Southwest Riverside County California. He is free to any who is interested.
I was given a chicken that was suppose to be a Penny but is instead a Pennington. I cannot keep him and need to rehome him if possible. What is the best way to try and get that done. Any suggestions. I live in Southwest Riverside County, California.
Thank you all for your thoughts as it has been hard for us. Chicken keeping is fun until you have to face the sad reality of their fatal vulnerabilities. I just wish we could have saved her and wonder if something I did or didn't do contributed to the outcome. So many conditions have similar...
Last Saturday my Blue Andulusion girl, Olive, developed a cough and a squeak that progressively got worse. We tried some VETRX with her but by Monday she was struggling to breath. We took her to an avian vet who checked her out and got us started on antibiotics that I had to inject into her...
We had a gap over the top of the nest box door. The hubby installed some garage door weatherstrip along the inside to close it off to drafts. Worked great.
Cleaning the dust bath only takes a minute and they do make a mess of it. they may not care but I do. And the peat moss does absorb the moisture as I found out during a recent downpour but it dried out pretty fast.
I designated a space under their ramp and against the back 2x4 rail of the run the rest is lined with a couple of bricks and large rocks to keep it contained. I mix dirt sand and peat moss. I was concerned for a while that they didn't like it, but do find them now hanging out in it quite a bit...
I started my book as just a personal creative writing project but grew to a short story that was suitable for middle grade school reading, I think a bit over 10,000 words.
Do you have a target group of readers in mind?
I observed the neighbourhood chickens many months and ended up writing a children's story based on some of the happenings and sprinkled with some life experiences of mine.
Windsong Wendy
Ps...that lead to my obsession to finally get some of my own hens.
Been a bit of work keeping the girls cool in this 100+ CA summer heat.We have a box fan to keep air moving, misters which do bring the temperature down about 5 degrees. I put ice in their daily waterer, lay some frozen bottles of water down on the ground, have a wading trough with bricks and...
This thread has been very helpful as one of my girls is showing signs of respiratory infection. Suspecting fungus as we mist to keep the chickens cool in our hot summer days that are 100+. I also may have inadvertently used some leaves and such that may have been carrying spores in the coop...
I wrote a children's book a couple of years ago about a little chicken growing up on a ranch and her adventures. Based on a chick that my daughter and I rescued. That was the start to my chicken addiction. It's called Windsong Wendy...
So sorry for you and your little one.
I had a polish chick that started showing signs of cross beak at a couple of weeks. I wanted to try and give her some life to live as she had the best personality of the four chicks that I got. Gave her personal feeding time everyday but did not thrive as...
Sorry to hear of your loss.
I had my first incident today with a hawk. Fortunately my 3 girls are okay but rattled. I was working in the yard while they ranged and heard a ruckus behind me. The hawk was pretty close around the bushes where they ran. I yelled and clapped my hands to chase it...
