Checking-In On Peeps - Post Here To Say Hello!

Well, I'm still tending the flock. I'm at 46 right now. My sweet Doodle (on my shoulder) passed away last summer, as well as my other little silkie rooster, Archie. They were 8 and 10 yrs old. I've now got two completely opposite roos (size-wise). One is Shorty (a little ball of a bantam...

    Decapitated chicks inside cage?

The ones you said are missing heads or bodies are being taken by some kind of predator. After years of fighting rats, even though I keep feed in metal cans, I was tired of them tunneling in, so I completely enclosed my entire pen, including the floor, with 1/2" hardware cloth (wire). I'm...

What color did you paint your coop?

Mine is unpainted. Made from all reclaimed wood. When my husband didn't like that we could see the wonky part of the corrugated tin roof, I suggested a false front in Old West style, which I designed and he helped me build. He even gave it a nod to our bantam rooster, Doodle, by cutting out...

Oh, wait, I think I just found it on another page on BYC: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/greener-pastures-chicken-feed-recipe.827398/ Is that the right recipe? Thanks again.

I know it's been awhile since you posted this, but I'm just now coming across your page. I tried going to the link to GreenerPastures, but it seems to be broken (takes me to an "before you go" that wants me to click on something that I don't want to and nothing else). Do they still have their...

Non-laying 4/5yrold chicken doing penguin walk

I have a 5 yr old Rhode Island Red (named Cora after my mother, who thinks it is hilarious that I named a chicken after her). Cora started walking like a penguin just after Christmas. I checked for egg bound, but found no egg in her. Gave her a warm epsom bath anyway, which she seemed to...

    Refrigerated eggs experiment complete!

I didn't even know you could hatch eggs after being refrigerated until a couple months ago when I heard it here! Now I'm hearing you say that temperature can change whether an egg produces a female or male chick? Maybe I didn't know this stuff because I've only always bought chicks already...

My rooster is always attacking me!!!

Oh, dear. I couldn't watch after he got him tied up. Not that I haven't killed and butchered chickens before. But this one looked too much like my little Doodle!! (the one on my shoulder in my pic!)

    Anyone used spinosad for mites?

What brand of permethrin do you use? I've posted above about the other mixture that I use and it has worked very well for me. My vet suggested Permethrin once and I bought it, but it smelled like gasoline! I couldn't even stand to be in the henhouse after I used it and it took a long time for...

My rooster is always attacking me!!!

I have to agree with everyone else. I have gotten rid of aggressive roosters. My granddaughter was afraid to come over because of one particularly mean one I had. The solution I found was to just give them away to a family that I also give my old non-laying hens to. They said they make...

    Hatching Grocery store eggs attempt

I've never heard of this! Grocery store eggs are usually not fertile and have also been refrigerated (which would kill any fertility if there was any), and they are weeks old already. Even those marked "fertile" have been in the fridge. How would anyone hatch them?

    Disappeared without a trace

Very sorry to hear they are missing. I'm a little confused, though. I've never had chickens molt at 8 mos old. The first adult molt is usually after a year old, and closer to 1 1/2 yrs. Even BackYardChickens has a little video about molting. But I hope you find out what happened. I've...

    My Chicks all Died

Hi. I have never raised quail, although have thought seriously about doing so. I found a site that seems to give a lot of good info. I don't know what research you have already done. This site says that baby quail are most "fragile" during their first two weeks. I'm not sure if you got...

    Coop door question

That's a really nice enclosure for daytime and if you don't have a predator problem during the day. However, most of our predators come around at night. Chicken wire is just for keeping chickens in, not keeping predators out. With that being said, leaving the door open (as long as you don't...

Angry Vulture Living In Our Garage. How to get him out?

That is very odd for a vulture to go into a garage (or pretty much any building except for nesting, and even then only if the building has been abandoned for quite some time). Glad you got the bird out. I wonder if it was injured or something the reason it went into your garage?

I found this article about how to determine if hens are still laying. Yes, the bones do move back in tighter if they've stopped laying. There is also a lot of other good info in the article about comb color, etc: https://thehomesteadinghippy.com/how-to-tell-if-a-chicken-is-still-laying/

This is a hen right?! 😂

Well, I found someone who was in your same boat back in 2014 here on Backyard Chickens: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/rooster-or-pullet-6-month-old-ameraucana.851368/ If you look at the first pic of her rooster at that link, you can definitely see the pointy feathers on the neck. I'm...

I have to say that I have one gorgeous little bantam hen and she has grown some mighty spurs! But she is definitely a hen!

My little bantam rooster, Doodle, gets into the nest boxes all the time. Sometimes he's making noises to attract the hens. But sometimes I think he just goes in there for some "alone time". It's tough being little and being the boss of a flock of 36 (and everyone else is bigger)! He's five...
