    Advice for Harvesting Herbs

Hoping to get some advice on harvesting herbs. I grew basil last year by buying a started plant. I just picked some leaves off of it every now and then to feed the chickens, and they loved them. I'm trying a few new ones this year in addition to the basil: sage, lavender, and rosemary. I...

    Long-term Calcium Citrate Use?

Quick question: I had been feeding her the supplements but she just started molting (and hasn't laid any eggs in a week). Should I stop giving her the extras until she starts laying again?

Can a Muscovy Raise Other Duck Breeds?

Thank you for the info. I guess I will have to see how it goes with her, but I'll be sure to have a back up plan in case she decides she doesn't want them. Wow, that's awesome they've lived that long!

Can a Muscovy Raise Other Duck Breeds?

Yes, that's true. I will raise them myself if that happens, but I'm hoping she'll be a good mother if I introduce them carefully. She's very sweet and gentle with eggs whenever she's sitting on them (even without being broody), they're just not fertilized. Did your Muscovy raise the babies as...

Can a Muscovy Raise Other Duck Breeds?

I have a Muscovy hen who I was going to give two babies to once she goes broody. I was hoping to get sexed ducklings so I know that they'll be female. I don't want male ducks and would rather not try to find new homes for them (especially once mom and babies bond with each other). Everywhere...

    Long-term Calcium Citrate Use?

Okay thank you, I will try that. I checked the label, there isn't any magnesium added to it. Does that mean I should add something to the feed for all the laying hens?

    Blue the Blind Chicken

Update on Blue. She's now 7 years old. And weird surprise, she laid an egg a few days ago. I thought she wasn't going to lay one again. Definitely going to keep this one and add it to my other egg shells.

    Long-term Calcium Citrate Use?

Just an update for Creme Brulee. Still laying soft shell eggs. I tried the calcium and vitamin E, no noticeable differences. Also tried deworming after that. At first I thought it worked (I think she laid one or two hard shell eggs - it can be hard to tell her and her sister's eggs apart). Then...

    Long-term Calcium Citrate Use?

Okay thank you for the info Yes, she eats a good amount of her layer feed crumbles every day. It's 3.3% min to 4.3% max calcium according to the label

    Long-term Calcium Citrate Use?

Okay thank you both, I understand what you're saying. What would be the dosage for the carbonate? That would probably be better to use instead if she is not eating or receiving enough calcium.

    Long-term Calcium Citrate Use?

Shoot, I feel terrible to be giving the wrong amount then! This is the label on mine Should I trust the amount of mg that it states for 2 caplets? Either way, I'll only feed one to her.

    Long-term Calcium Citrate Use?

I was under the impression from elsewhere on the forum that the dosage (although probably for a single use) was 500-600mg, so I figured she would get slightly less with it being dissolved in water and not drinking the entire thing. Would it be only one pill then, 315mg?

    Long-term Calcium Citrate Use?

Thank you, I'll try giving it that way. I'll try it for a week and see if that helps. My thought process is that worms take away nutrients from the digestive track, so maybe she is getting enough calcium from her diet, but they might be taking it away. And for the vitamins, I wasn't sure if...

    Long-term Calcium Citrate Use?

I have a Leghorn mix hen who will be 2 this March. The past week and a half she has been laying shell-less/soft shell eggs. After the first one, I gave her calcium citrate (2 tablets that according to the bottle is equal to 630mg) mixed in a little water that she willingly drank. I gave her that...

    Bad Eye Injury

It took about 2 weeks for the tissue to disappear back underneath the eyelid. She had a little swellling around the eye area for another week or two after that. I think the terramycin helped a lot, so definitely get some if you can find it. I got mine from Amazon if they don't have it at any of...

Ended Post Your Best (Worst) Chicken Molt Pictures - 2023

Louise, one of my Leghorn hens. Half of them decided to wait until November and December to molt, but I'm glad they're getting a break from egg laying. Luckily it has been a relatively mild winter so far
